  • AT&T 3.0 Firmware MMS and Tethering Details
    So we know that AT&T is going to be behind everyone else in allowing MMS and tethering once iPhone 3.0 firmware is released. The question is why. A BoyGenius report via one of their "AT&T Ninjas" fills in the supposed details.

    MMS
    The reason AT&T is going to be slow on getting MMS provisioned for iPhones is laughable. To prevent MMS from working properly on iPhones AT&T has added "Opt Out MMS codes" to iPhone accounts preventing MMS. Once the codes are taken off accounts MMS will work fine on the iPhone with 3.0 firmware at no additional cost -- it is included with the standard $20 SMS/data plan required for iPhones already. The catch is AT&T has to removed these Op Out MMS codes from every iPhone account manually. Hah.

    Tethering
    Tethering for AT&T is a different monster. The delay is reported to be completely intentional on AT&T's part and at the launch of iPhone firmware 3.0 tethering will be disabled entirely for AT&T customers. It will become an option at a later date as soon as AT&T has managed to cobble together na unlimited data tethering plan for the iPhone at expense of an additional $70/mo.

      Going back to the tethering issue. I've used PDAnet(which is an amazing piece of software) to VPN into my work via my laptop seemlessly as well as download all sorts of things on the go, and even play online games. While using my iPhone to tether I probably have only capped maybe over a gig of data in a month using my data plan. So to put it in perspective it will be ok and you won't be flagged if you stay at a reasonable data use. I'm sure there are users out there that don't tether but can put down some crazy amount of usage if you continuously stream YouTube vids from your phone etc. So just in my personal experience using PDAnet or whatever pleases you to tether outside of using AT&T's ridiculously priced tether plan will be fine so long as you do it conservatively.

      Just to follow up on what stickyd reported, I contacted AT&T and the Customer Service Rep was more than willing to change the opt out but couldn't. She called tech support and they said Apple sent an email telling them to not remove the opt out. I pressed the issue and they sent me to Apple who said it was AT&T's fault and it was because the software on AT&T's side is still in beta. She claimed it had nothing to do with manually removing the codes and that once the software is ready, they will all be removed at once "at the end of the summer."

      Wow att says its apples fault, apple is blaming at&t, this is some bullsh!t, i mean let someone take responsibility, well according to BGR, they say its att's fault.... the blaming game is on....

      I called yesterday and the lady I got pretty much said the same thing. Today, I called again and said I was a developer and had the GSM version of the 3.0 software and need MMS access to test apps I was developing. She did note that the "opt out mms" was previously removed from my account. She literally tried sending me 4 different software updates (requiring me to restart my phone each time) before we finally got it to work. It seems like AT&T can allow MMS, but they sorry *** bastards are either not ready or have something else up their sleeves? We'll see if they break my mms access in the upcoming weeks?

      I dunno wtf is wrong wit em, i worked for att when i was in TX, but it was for the telco/ UVERSE side (THEIR CRAPPY TV SERVICE THAT RUNS OVER FIBER OPTICS), and damn all d calls i was gettin were bout customers being upset at the stupid tv freezing up and they expect me to make some stupid sales offer when i can't even help resolve the reason for calling. Anyway i hope they have a lot of overtime next week cus their call centers would be flooded with iphone 3G/3GS users who want MMS enabled on their account asap. Damn we employees called ATT (At This Time) so at this time, MMS is not available 4 use till END OF SUMMER, WTFFFFFFF

      Hey guys, I'm trying to update my .ipcc but when I do the shift-check for update, itll only allow me to pick an .ispw...It wont even see the .ipcc file. Anyone with the same issue?

      EDIT: Okay, got it to find the file but now i get some "firmware not compatible" babble

      we pay 30 a month and that does not include any SMS or MMS

      and the original iphone, that is 20 a month with SMS, won't have MMS ever

      Hmmm...I don't have 3.0 yet, but I see a lot of people are having success with having someone from AT&T remove the opt-out or whatever. Should I call now before 3.0 is officially released and AT&T is flooded with calls so it will work as soon as I get 3.0 on Wednesday, or are more people having trouble getting AT&T to do this?

      Guys is the old ipcc MMS still working? The New GM firmware doesn't even give me the option. Should I do a complete restore with no back ups?

      My friend and I were able to get it to work today on our iPhones by calling at&t. The customer service tech removed the Opt Out and then put something back on our accounts, and they both worked. Then after about 10 minutes his phone lost Setting-Messages MMS on/off toggle. He is no longer able to send/receive picture messages. He is however still able to edit network setting and tether, so whatever happened just removed the on/off switch. Any way to fix?

      UPDATE: Attempted to restore, downgrade, flash ATT_US.ippc, then upgrade with no success. Also tried restoring to 3.0gm then flashing carrier settings, still no luck. It gives him the ability to edit network setting, but not to enable MMS......

      his stopped working or both? Did he sync his phone?

      Thats wierd... Have him do a Full restore with no syncing of previous data. See if that helps.

      When we restored it back to the GM, we set it up as a new phone, no previous data at all. Still only able to edit carrier settings, no toggle.

      do you installed the GM initially and it had the MMS option? Then you reinstalled and the option was gone?

      I had MMS working for the past 6 months ... then it quit a few weeks ago; tried calling AT&T to have it turned back on... told them I have a developer account (which I do)... Spoke to two CSRs... both of whom were rather rude about the whole thing (suspect they must be getting a lot of calls) ... both were also adamant -- "Apple told us we can't turn it on for anyone -- they decide when we can offer MMS." I wonder how Apple feels that they are being blamed for any MMS roll out delays by AT&T?

      I am so over AT&T ... thinking about giving up 3G, taking my iPhone and going back to T-Mobile...probably won't but would like to. The Android phone just doesn't do it for me....

      Well, I woke up this morning to discover that I can no onger send MMS messages! Seriously, I just don't understand it. It's pretty evident that it works on the new 3.0 software, so I don't understand why AT&T feels the need to re-block it? What harm is it doing? It's not going to be an extra fee and they are going to "eventually" allow it, so what's the big deal? What a bunch of f@#*ers they are.

      20 dollar sms/data plan required? Im a bit confused on that statement. As it stands i am paying 30 dollars for unlimited data, but I certainly don't have unlimited SMS. That for me is an additional 30 dollars...

      So Im a bit curious to see how this pricing is going to pan out...

      Hell, with the new push features, I might just convice everyone to buy Beejive and I.M. all my friends from here on out...
