  • NEW: iPhone 3GS - The S is for Speed

WWDC is fun, huh? Today saw the official announcement of the iPhone 3GS.

Available June 19th, the iPhone 3GS is billed as "the fastest, most powerful iPhone yet."

    Here's the key points:
    • 2 sizes. 16GB in black or white, $199 | 32GB in black or white for $299.
    • REQUIRES a new 2 year agreement for those prices. Upgrading AT&T users will pay $599 for the 16GB or $699 for the 32GB, even if you're replacing an iPhone 3G. (pf edit: check note below re:this price)
    • Video Recording in VGA up to 30fps, with built in editing features.
    • 3MP camera with auto-focus.
    • Compass.
    • Landscape Keyboard.
    • Battery life on 2G and WiFi increased. 3G battery life remains the same as on the iPhone 3G.
    • Audio playback increased from 24 hours per charge to 30. Video increased from 7 to 10.

EDIT: There's some chatter in the thread about AT&T actually offering iPhone upgrades at a lower price than quoted in this article. Upon checking out the AT&T website, it looks like the $349 and $299 upgrade prices are for the CURRENT iPhone 3G, NOT the 3GS - AT&T does NOT have the iPhone 3GS listed on their site yet (June 8, 11:45PM EST). HOWEVER, if you log in through Apple's website, they ARE offering existing users a lower price (see below graphic) of $399.00 for the 16GB iPhone 3G S (black or white) and $499.00 for the 32GB iPhone 3G S (black or white) on renewals (plus an $18 upgrade price).

Yah no kidding, there is no advantage... Everything that is provided I can get with the 3.0 software. There literally is almost NO ADVANTAGE of buying the 3GS...

I don't care about the speed of the connection. Only the phone.. and without hardware spec's you can believe I will stick with my 2G.

the only nice thing will be the increase in speed, as long as 3.0 is not buggy,
also the option of been able to delete individual txt messages will be good too.

any news as to when 3.0 is going to be released for 3g and the original iphone, is it the same as the release date for the new iphone?

overall as per usual to much hype and not enough product improvements. though
i'll be now looking at a mac book pro

Ouch...with that upgrade pricetag I definately am not doing it. $200 would be a great upgrade price for the 16gb....but wait....if you watched the conference....mms won't be available for ATT till sometime in the summer....no mention about flash at all that I saw. WTF....bummer was really hoping for something different. Ah my contract is up maybe I will switch carriers and go grab a PRE.

i'm on the apple site purchasing it, and it shows these prices, not the $599 (16gig) or $699 (32gig)

it shows $399 (16) and $499 (32) with a two year contract renewal

*]REQUIRES a new 2 year agreement for those prices. Upgrading AT&T users will pay $599 for the 16GBor $699 for the 32GB, even if you're replacing an iPhone 3G.

That means if u sign a new two year contract u get the $199, $299 pricing. If u just upgrade to a new phone and keep your current contract its the more expensive prices.

well they got the compass, the memory size, the price, video and video editing, and they even got the name of it (3GS) but some were saying it would be called iPhone video.

i'll be sticking with my 3G and just get Cycorder once I get to 3.0. The 3G basically has a compass, just get MobileX GPS from the App Store and it uses its GPS for the compass.

maybe they'll announce a new iPod touch, because they said at the beginning of their keynote:

So in this keynote, wed like to tell you about some of the things were doing on the Mac, the iPhone and the iPod touch.
      (one of tysiphonehelp's tweets)

maybe they were just referring to the 3.0 update. can't wait till they release the finished firmware.

I bet now all those jailbroken 3G's are gonna be hot items on ebay. I'd keep that 3G if you were thinking of selling it

So for people on AT&T with iPhone 3g:
iPhone 3GS 16 GB is $399 with reup to 2 years.
iPhone 3GS 32 GB is $499 with reup to 2 years.

The cheaper pricing $199 & 299 is only for NEW customers to AT&T (or people done with their 2 year contract)

I am very dissapointment with all this new features come on all this stuff should of been out since the 3g iphone came out. I am not going to go and pay 699.99 for a 32g iphone its not worth it.

Cheapshot at existing 3G owners with no upgrade discount. Assholes.

How much is it to cancel and resign up? $175 + $299 - only $475 then haha.

from the AT&T upgrade site, dont know if its new or not but its still funny cuz it shows how much they appreciate their loyal overpaying customers...
      "iPhone Upgrade
As a valued AT&T customer, we can offer you a discounted iPhone upgrade at a higher price, along with a 2-year commitment and an $18 upgrade fee."

what is a discount if its at a higher price lol?
ik ik subsidized cost and all but it reads funny.
