  • NEW: iPhone 3GS - The S is for Speed

WWDC is fun, huh? Today saw the official announcement of the iPhone 3GS.

Available June 19th, the iPhone 3GS is billed as "the fastest, most powerful iPhone yet."

    Here's the key points:
    • 2 sizes. 16GB in black or white, $199 | 32GB in black or white for $299.
    • REQUIRES a new 2 year agreement for those prices. Upgrading AT&T users will pay $599 for the 16GB or $699 for the 32GB, even if you're replacing an iPhone 3G. (pf edit: check note below re:this price)
    • Video Recording in VGA up to 30fps, with built in editing features.
    • 3MP camera with auto-focus.
    • Compass.
    • Landscape Keyboard.
    • Battery life on 2G and WiFi increased. 3G battery life remains the same as on the iPhone 3G.
    • Audio playback increased from 24 hours per charge to 30. Video increased from 7 to 10.

EDIT: There's some chatter in the thread about AT&T actually offering iPhone upgrades at a lower price than quoted in this article. Upon checking out the AT&T website, it looks like the $349 and $299 upgrade prices are for the CURRENT iPhone 3G, NOT the 3GS - AT&T does NOT have the iPhone 3GS listed on their site yet (June 8, 11:45PM EST). HOWEVER, if you log in through Apple's website, they ARE offering existing users a lower price (see below graphic) of $399.00 for the 16GB iPhone 3G S (black or white) and $499.00 for the 32GB iPhone 3G S (black or white) on renewals (plus an $18 upgrade price).

Same. That iPhone is nice, but I'm not paying $700 for it! Oh well. Guess I can live with the 3G for another year. Hopefully AT&T winds up offering us a discount or the next iPhone is wayyyyy better.

Instead of crossing your fingers just do some reading. This upgrade is a huge let-down if you're currently a 3G owner. The ends don't justify the means. $700 beans for a compass? Wooo? Faster speed that's not currently available? Oh boy, sign me back up. Atleast now you can use the compass to point to the nearest at&t store that jacked your money.
Not a personal attack against you, just a statement of fact about the general state of S STANDS FOR SAME. Chill out man.

Or 3G Suckers as that's what they've made us

This is a bit disappointing I have to a admit. There seems to be very little the new iphone gives that current 3g with 3.0 wont. How will focus work with the current iPhone? I guess autofocus is a hardware requirement/feature?

I wonder how pricing will work with O2 here in the UK?

OMG, will you 3G users stop complaining about not getting a discount or whatever you get over there in the states. You bought the iPhone and no where does it say in the agreement that you will get a discount when a new iPhone comes out.
Mobile companies bring out new phones nearly every month, get over it! You bought the phone so quit moaning and there;s hardly any difference.

I'll stick with my 2G yet again for another year until Apple put a flash for a camera and two speakers that you can actually hear.

Easily misunderstood when it follows a quote, but I can see why someone would say that [S="SAME"]. From 2G to 3G there was a cosmetic change, along with some major internal changes. It's just a shock they stayed with the same design, and also that they [at&t] would charge existing customers full price. When I went from an 8525 to the 8925 [Tilt], I got a price break and the phone was cosmetically different with some nice changes. I just think "this" current iPhone upgrade is a let-down when I compare it to what I already have with the 3G.

      well im still excited.
[posted on the other thread as well as this thread for future reference]

i did some snooping around to check out pricing, because I became a little sketched out on the fine print at Apple's online store site on the bottom of the page. It says the following:
Requires new two-year AT&T wireless service contract, sold separately to qualified customers; credit check required; must be 18 or older. For non-qualified customers, including existing AT&T customers who want to upgrade from another phone or replace an iPhone 3G, the price with a new two-year agreement is $499 (8GB), $599 (16GB), or $699 (32GB).
Due to my high interest, I gave at&t a call, as well as apple. Both of them were unsure regarding upgrade prices. So instead, I went to Apple's online store again, and decided to "Pre-Order" the new iPhone 3GS. I entered my information, and I entered the phone number that had the eligible upgrade plan, and VIOLA; it said straight up right there; $199 for 16GB and $299 for 32GB. (Yes I am an existing AT&T customer, and YES I did upgrade my own line to iPhone 3G one year ago, thats why I am using another family members upgrade to upgrade my own phone, because my line is not yet eligible).

Hope this helps anybody else that was wondering the same thing!

I think this is a heads-up for everyone who has an iphone now, is under contract, and was looking to move up to the new 3GS. Over the last year I have realized that is is not in our best interest to have a contractual agreement. I had been using the Motorola V9 and bought an Iphone 3G outright. I will simply let my contract expire, buy a 3GS from a private seller and continue on. The pricing really proves what ATT is out to do ... make more $$$ and nothing more!

I couldn't have said it better myself. I've simply glanced at the posts in this thread and have already decided I won't be reading them. All people are doing is complaining about decisions they made themselves and are taking it out on Apple. No one said you had to buy the 3G. No one says you have to buy the 3GS. & the 3GS has more features than the current model, therefore, it's an upgrade. Stop setting your expectations so high and quit complaining about everything.

Because we are all just AMAZED that a phone could possibly have video. It's more like we have been amazed at how long it went without it and amazed that it didn't have it from the beginning. I'm actually surprised they would make a commercial focusing on it and drawing attention to such an obvious deficiency, especially with the obvious immediate response of "that's expected, not "amazing." Any chance that this is a rejected commercial idea?

How much longer before 3G launch buyers will become upgrade-elligible by extending another two years?

I'm not concerned with unlocking, but I'm gonna stick with my unlockable 3G and wait to see how Jailbreaking turns out. I'm sure it'll still fetch a pretty penny if the 3GS isn't unlockable by the time it's Jailbreak-able (assuming a lot, I know, but devteam knows we have high expectations of them ).

I'm trying to figure out if you're just ignorant, or arrogant. Everyone has a right to voice their opinion on this, and if it doesn't agree with your own opinion who the ef are you to say they're "complaining"? Arrogant ***. Every other phone they [at&t] offer allows existing customers a discount as an incentive to buy an upgrade, while extending their contracts. Basically a win-win for everyone. This has nothing to do with what the contract says, or what we all signed-up for when we purchased our 3G's. This is just people venting over a huge let-down with their own opinions, and it's jackasses like you with your high-horse attitude that's more annoying than at&t's jacked prices.

Anyone reckon next year's model will be the 3GTX, with a 3GTS budget model (a la nVidia)? All companies seem to do these days is add loads of fancy letters on their products
