  • Apple Releases iTunes 8.2, Jailbreakers beware
Apple released iTunes 8.2 early this afternoon, an update to its music jukebox software and online store interface for the Mac and Windows. It's available for download through the Software Update system preference.

Apple notes that iTunes 8.2 now supports iPhones and iPod touches equipped with the iPhone 3.0 software update. Other accessibility improvements and bug fixes have also been made.

Jailbreakers beware: Apple also improved security in iTunes 8.2. According to a notice, Apple has improved bounds checking in 8.2 to prevent a stack buffer overflow problem that could lead to unexpected app termination or arbitrary code execution.

    from MuscleNerd:
Today's iTunes 8.2 update changes the way your computer talks to the device. This affects things like QuickPwn and PwnageTool when they try to identify what's connected. Also, ssh over usb breaks due to same reasons. Fixes are in the works but for now avoid 8.2(These are probably *not* anti-jailbreak maneuvers, just Apple changing protocols that normally only Apple cares about.) To fully uninstall iTunes 8.2 on Mac, close all iTunes and do this from Terminal.app. Do NOT mistype it .. https://twerbose.com/t8791
    from Chronic dev:

iTunes 8.2 Update == Bad. It will check the hash of newer firmware images, call the mothership when restoring to beta firmwares, have updated MobileDevice so programs like QuickPwn and anything else that uses MD will get messed up, make sure your device has the correct security epoch, chipid, security domain, production mode, board id, bb chip id, etc. They can all be patched, but for now, hold back from updating.
If you got too excited and installed the new iTunes grab this file to uninstall iTunes 8.2 on a Mac

If you install iTunes 8.2, QuickPwn and PwnageTool will not be able to talk to your phone correctly. You can always jailbreak with iTunes 8.1 or iTunes 8.2 prerelease for beta 4.

As I mentioned in #modmyi a couple weeks ago, Apple is tossing around new ideas for preventing jailbreaking. One of the ideas that was suggested from my group is to stop using one encryption key and instead use a combination of udid, hashes based on imei and letting itunes generate a new encryption key for the device after validating the firmware at the so called mothership. This will slow down jailbreaking considerably but will not stop it completely... The dev-team are a pretty smart lot but so are Apple developers. A cat and mouse game for certain!

Yes, but by throwing ideas like that around you are giving Apple ideas....

AMEN!!! This morning I was adding an album to my phone and I saw the prompt for the 8.2 update. I too usually hold off until the brave masses have performed the update with no problems. When I was on 1.1.2 and tried to update to 1.1.4 it did not work correctly since I had an older version of iTunes. I am so glad to check here this morning because I was gonna update iTunes when I got home today.

I hope this does not affect the new device and the new 3.0 FW too much or I hope the problem will be fixed by then.

Sorry if I seem slow here but I have a jailbroken Iphone. Can I update and still use Itunes on my phone? I do not want to use pwange as phone already broken. Will Itunes stop me from being able sync?

Sorry if this has been answered but have read through the posts and am still unsure.

      Yes you can synch.
It just stops pwnage so you can't jailbreak with it. If you are already jailbroken and will not need to jailbreak again it is OK.

There is simply no reason to update iTunes at the moment. Just hold off until we get the green light from the dev team

Wtf, why do Apple call it the iPhone 3.0 software update? It should be called 3.0 software update :eh:

I accidentally updated and have not found any instructions on how to un-do what I've done on a PC. Any suggestions?
