  • iPhone 4 Unlock Less Than a Month Away?

There has been some news about the 4.2.1 jailbreak lately, but the unlock has been missing in action for some time. However, we got a little ray of light about ultrasn0w on Twitter from Egyptian baseband hacker Sherif Hashim, who worked on the 3.1.3 unlock. He's still keeping it on the down low - English-only speakers would have missed it - but he's indicated the unlock should be ready in about a month.

Sherif Hashim found an exploitable baseband crash that could bring an unlock for basebands 05.14.02 and 02.10.04 back in November. Very little has been heard since then, and nothing definitive as to the timing on a new ultrasn0w for iOS 4.1 and 4.2. One impatient unlocker sent Hashim a tweet in Arabic, saying he was going away for military service on January 16 and asking if the unlock would be ready by then. Hashim's response, in English: "sure."

The main reason we don't get a lot of news from these guys is that they need to spend their time hacking, not sending out updates. As Hashim promised yesterday, "whenever it is ready for beta testing and use, u ll all be notified thru @MuscleNerd's Twitter or mine." So consider following both on Twitter, and we'll also have the latest news available for you here.

I still think it's funny. People are paying for a phone and plan but would never pay for a jailbreak or unlock. Any time someone says they'd pay, everybody flames them and says a jailbreak and unlock should be always free.

Eventually these devs get tired of all the crap and quit or give up. Look at the names from the early 1.1.1 jailbreak days. same people? nope. new fresh faces always waiting to burn out in a year or two.

Why don't these guys just sell the exploits to someone who will make it their job to develop in a reasonable timeframe? and charge $5-10 for the product after all their hard earned effort? I mean how many people pay $10-20 for MyWi and dumb $1 apps.

A few of these fine folks should break free from this nonsense and take this seriously. Business is not a bad thing. This part-time free work crap is silly. I bought unlocked just so I didn't have to deal with this.

Give to me NOW! I've had my iPhone 4 since November, it came with 4.1 and the updated baseband so I've just had a more expensive iPod Touch for a month lol

And it's guys like this that drove away Geohot. I miss the days when you actually needed to at least know some stuff to jailbreak, not just click click. Then yay I haz jailbreak and a few days later. "oh noes I updated give me unlock now!"

Not flaming this guy just pointing out the community has changed so much since purplera1n came along.

Correct me if I'm wrong but vodafone uk unlocks your iphone for free once your contract is up? Well thats what the customer service says.
Although vodafone customer service terrible, I would take the majority of what they say with a pinch of salt.

People just don't seem to have any patience or can't be greatful. The hackers don't owe us (users) anything. If it wasn't because of the hackers, we wouldn't have our iphones unlocked in the first place. It will come out when it comes out, until then have some patience or get an Android or learn to hack yourselves.

Agree, wait if you can and STFU if you can't help. Asking for the unlock as if you deserve it is pathetic and annoying.

So just do it with Redsn0w... Just boot tethered after jailbreak and all cydia installs and updates. Then don't reboot phone...

I might be going to Belgium middle of next year and I'd love to have an unlocked iPhone while I'm there. Even if it is for only a few days. I'd bet iOS 5 will be out by then though. Any opinions on whether it would be worth it to buy and unlocked iPhone 5 or whatever it's going to be called while I'm there? I want to get my parents one but they don't want a data plan or signing a contract with AT&T. Would it even work here?

I'm skipping the iPhone 4, cos I have a 32GB 3GS, but when the iPhone 5 comes out next summer I'm just gonna pay the premium and get a factory unlocked one. Or just get my network to unlock it for free after a year.
Still good news that the dev teams are still hard at work.

Haha so I don't know if my post got deleted because I triggered the swear filter or because I said I'd gladly pay for a jailbreak.

Either way, paraphrased from my previous post. I'd gladly pay for a jailbreak. Although I do think it should be free from Apple, if devs wanted to charge for it I think they should be handsomely rewarded for their hard work.
