  • Fix Battery Drain with redsn0w 0.9.6b6 and SAM

The iPhone Dev-Team has released redsn0w 0.9.6b6 for Windows and Mac with a new tweak that avoids the issues like battery-drain and overheating that plague unlocks. Rather than using redsn0w to hacktivate, this version lets users click a "Deactivate" button to remove the patches that affected battery life and push notifications, allowing @sbinger's SAM tool to do the hacktivation.

Sam (@sbinger) Binger, the developer of TetherMe, came up with what he calls Subscriber Artificial Module (SAM), which tricks iTunes and your iPhone into generating official activation tickets even though the unlocked device carries an unofficial SIM. As a result, the lockdownd patches that were required to make hacktivation work with redsn0w are no longer needed, and unlockers can use SAM to hacktivate without taking the battery life hit.

The Dev-Team is making the process easier by adding a "Deactivate" button, which removes the patches and lets SAM take over the hacktivation process. SAM also includes a "stockify" tool to let users of iOS 3.0+ to revert to a stock lockdownd: add http://repo.bingner.com as a repo in Cydia, install "SAM" and "SAMPrefs," and then run stockify in secure shell.

I wish they came out with this a couple of days sooner. My iphone 4 was on 4.1 unlocked on 1.59.00. My battery was only lasting only a half a day and the phone kept going in and out of service. I really don't need the unlock. I only kept it to make extra money on the phone when i sell it. So i tried going up to 4.2.1 losing unlock with redsn0w but battery drain still the same. Since it was tethered it was annoying having to boot up with a computer especially when i didn't have one. Just gave up and tried to do a fresh itunes update which took long, kept getting 1013 error. But now im on 4.2.1 with new baseband did a fresh restore and my battery is still depleating rapidly. But ill tell you what, my iphone 4 is much much faster loading pages and opening and closing apps. Definetly more responsive. But my battery is still draining. Do you think there was anything leftover? I did a fresh restore but was lazy and restored from a backup. I hate setting up as a new phone it takes forever putting all your stuff back and settings.

Just my opinion but I dont believe it should help you or I as we did not hacktivate and are not using ultrasn0w to unlock. Either we are with the official carrier or are factory unlocked.

I have an unlocked Iphone 3gs on 4.1 with the 06.15.00 ipad baseband. since unlocking, my battery can be fully charged at bedtime, and dead in the morning. Will this new redsnow fix this? also, is it possible to restore, or upgrade to latest IOS now that it has the ipad baseband on it? Of course, not even a week after unlocking mine, my boss decides to put us all on an AT&T plan
      Thanks in advance.

      **MOD EDIT**
      Blurred out IMEI.

You would have to restore to a custom 4.2.1 with no baseband in it. Otherwise you will get a 1015 error and will not be able to kick out of recovery. As for your battery issue then the method in the OP "should" fix it.

What would I use to create the custome ipsw with no FW? snowbreeze?

These instructions are much more clear, even telling you what order to do things in.

Only pwnage tool can create a 4.2.1 custom firmware right now.

      Ok.. Im confused as well.
      Here's my situation:
iPhone 3g currently updated to 4.2.1 w/ iPad 06.15 BB on Dec 1st. via Pwnage Tool using ultrasn0w
      Unlocked for Tmobile US
I am experiencing battery drain and push issues.
What do I need to do to resolve this?
Is it possible to run Redsnow to only Deactivate the phone and then use the SAM utility through cydia to activate through iTunes?
I am confused as I am happily on 06.15 BB with 4.2.1 jailbreak/unlocked and I only want to relieve the device of battery drain and push issues.
      Please advise,
      Thank you in advance

Did you find a solution to this??? i'm in virtually the same position. I got a new iphone 3gs locked on the 3 network - it hadnt been activated i updated to 4.2.1 and did the whole jailbrake thing with the ipad baseband. followed the instructions to activate with SAM - all seemed straight forward and easy.. but when it came to itunes i got the same error as you. Now it seems as if im stuffed If anyone you or anyone reading found a solution to this... please reply

You have to run redsn0w again and check box " just boot tethered."

Great work, @sbingner!
So before you deactivated you must install SAM and SAMPrefs first from cydia...

Go to their website for better instruction: bingner.com/SAM.html (remember to type "SAM" not "sam" or else your nose will bleed)

Just successfully completed this. I think. under settings>carrier automatic is the only choice and it is continually searching. Is that normal?

Update:it just stopped searching. ANYONE ELSE SEEING A REQUEST FROM iTUNES TO DO A CARRIER TEST? I'm to afraid to say click OK.

I did everything instructed, installed SAM, then redsn0w to deactivate, then touch on deactivate, then connect iTunes. iTunes said sim card not supported.
so i change from auto detect to manual and chose the bundle that my iPhone originally bundled with, chose SIMID, then reboot, then connect iTunes. still saying sim card not supported.
why why why is this happening..and now i can't sync because iTunes won't activate my phone. what to do please please help. I've restored like 3 times and same thing still happens.

to threader I had the same problems you need to use previous version of redsnow then simply choose the options multitasking enabled and battery percentage, just choose one of these options re-jailbreak and the iphone
will hacktivate your device. after the phone has rebooted you will
see you still have all your programs from cydia and itunes still on your device and it will sync your device, hope this helps bacause it helped me when I was in the same position oh also open SAM and it will say factory unlocked , so no wildcard message. I just turn off data and set mail to fetch also location services off when I'm not using these and battery is acting like it should good luck
