  • Fix Battery Drain with redsn0w 0.9.6b6 and SAM

The iPhone Dev-Team has released redsn0w 0.9.6b6 for Windows and Mac with a new tweak that avoids the issues like battery-drain and overheating that plague unlocks. Rather than using redsn0w to hacktivate, this version lets users click a "Deactivate" button to remove the patches that affected battery life and push notifications, allowing @sbinger's SAM tool to do the hacktivation.

Sam (@sbinger) Binger, the developer of TetherMe, came up with what he calls Subscriber Artificial Module (SAM), which tricks iTunes and your iPhone into generating official activation tickets even though the unlocked device carries an unofficial SIM. As a result, the lockdownd patches that were required to make hacktivation work with redsn0w are no longer needed, and unlockers can use SAM to hacktivate without taking the battery life hit.

The Dev-Team is making the process easier by adding a "Deactivate" button, which removes the patches and lets SAM take over the hacktivation process. SAM also includes a "stockify" tool to let users of iOS 3.0+ to revert to a stock lockdownd: add http://repo.bingner.com as a repo in Cydia, install "SAM" and "SAMPrefs," and then run stockify in secure shell.

However, before I downgraded/restored to 4.1, I had "wildcard activated" and still had the battery drain. I think it's possible to have that message without having actually disabled the redsn0w activation.

I would really recommend doing a restore and starting from scratch. If you can do a downgrade to 4.1, that's probably even better because you don't have to re-jailbreak every time the phone has to rebooted in the SAM installation process. It's a pain, but it's worth it.

If you're not sure you have 4.1 SHSH blobs backed up, open Cydia and it will tell you near the top of the home screen. I didn't remember having done it, but I was delighted to discover Cydia had done it for me when I first installed it.

If you activated with an AT&T SIM, you shouldn't be having the battery drain problem. You might want to check your settings, making sure you don't have stuff turned on that you don't need.

      Here's another good tutorial.
I don't have much interest in downgrading to 4.1. The only reason I updated from 4.0 to 4.2.1 is because I have a 3G and it ran like crap. 4.2.1 Runs ten times faster.

As far as the battery drain. I was getting a hot phone and a battery that would drain faster than I could charge it, and I turned off notifications and now its acting normal. It went all night on my bed-stand and only went down to 90%. Kinda a bummer as I was excited about notifications, but I will take the fast phone and longer battery.

Hi can anyone help me to get the ActivationState: WildCardActivated

my iphone is 3g on Globe Carrier the carrier i want is o2 i have used Redsn0w 0.9.6b6 using 4.1 firmware to jailbreak iphone

i have Installed "SAM" and "SAMPrefs"

i have then used Redsn0w 0.9.6b6 and only selected the option deactivate

      i have then gone to settings > SAM > De-Activate iphone >

loaded itunes and it gives me the message unable to read sim

now im stuck and dont know what to do but use the temporay battery drain solution on SBsettings i would prefer to have the ability to succesfully use SAM

Yeah i was getting the same problem but i realised when i was manually entering my carrier i was putting in the carrier i wanted to use instead of the carrier it was locked on. So i changed it to the carrier it is currently locked on then connected to itunes and i got a looping 'accessing itunes' statement when logging into itunes.. after quiting it recognised my phone.. phone then said 'waiting for activation' but nothing else happened SAM activation status is 'wildcardactivated' but phone says 'no signal'

So basically what i did to get to wildcardactivated was to manually eneter the details of the netowrk that your phones is currently locked to.. whilst having your desired sim in the phone.

If anyone can help me get a signal (yes i've installed unltrasn0w) then i'd appreciate the help. I presume it has something to do with the phone saying 'activated' which it hasn't said yet.

what i dont understand is i have an iphone4 activated with a dead ATT sim, its jb'd and does not have ultrasn0w on it nor does it have a working simcard (my phone has the latest baseband so i'm still waiting for an unlock fw4.1) the phone has wildcardactivated displayed in SAM, i've turned off 3G, EDGE, DATA, PHONE and at times i've even tried to see what happens when the phone's wifi is off as well but the battery is still draining at an alarming rate. on a full charge 100% will reach 15% within 3-4 hours on standby, standby meaning no use at all with everything turned off (basically manual airplane mode), the phone's screen is never turned on. i've tried battery doctor and cannot figure out for the life of me why the battery drains so fast even w/o waking it from standby. something is seriously wrong. i know it cant be a hardware issue because with stock 4.1 the issue is non-existant on top of that my phone is a brand new phone i traded in at the apple store (which is why i have the 2.14 baseband).

If you activated with a official 'dead' SIM and iTunes confirmed, then you don't need nor should you use SAM.

yes i kno but i just wanted to confirm activation with SAM incase something was faulty, really lost as to why my battery is draining so fast

SAM wont help you if you activated with official sim. Something else is causing your battery drain.

Top (from Cydia), displays lots of info, current load&idle, top CPU users and on and on. ssh into your phone, and execute. Control+C terminates top.

Will SAM work on my iPhone 4 v4.2.1 32GB Black???

I have the latest software and firmware installed...
I'm going on a trip to japan in 3 months and I need it unlocked, AT&T told me that they don't have the keys to unlock the iPhone. And apple told me that AT&T has to unlock it.

Ultrasnow is the ONLY way to unlock but doesn't work on your phone yet

I have iPhone 3GS (new Bootrom) running on 4.2.1, BB 05.15.4, and was Jailbroken with 0.9.6b5 (tethered)

I do not need to unlock using ultrasn0w/SAM as my iPhone is permanently unlocked through iTunes.

      1) What interaction is actually causing the battery drain?
      2) Will the Jailbreak 0.9.6b5 interacting with the official firmware from iTunes cause battery drain or does it only happen with the combination of Redsn0w and Ultrasn0w/SAM custom f/w?
      3) Is it worth me restoring my iPhone and removing the JB and re-install with Redsn0w 0.9.6b6 ?

      Thanks in advance

If you have a factory unlocked phone, then you don't need anything but a jailbreak. Any-SIM and activation are built in.

If you think you have battery issues, restore and check the battery. Once you've verified all is well, jb and check again. Then add Cydia apps one at a time and check. There may be a faster way, but this is fool-proof.

Ya, you could use his ATT sim to activate and then proceed to do the jailbreak, unlock. Then you wouldnt need to worry about using SAM.

      FIXED!!!

I had disabled it with red snow and still got a battery drain when notifications were turned on.

I updated SAM and SAMPREF to the newest version that came out today, and presses the revert to stock lockdown button. It said success. Then I pressed clear push sessions, and then de-activate phone and then I synced with iTuenes.

Now I have notifications turned on, and I have no battery drain.

UPDATE: Strike that, I am now getting a drain, again, just a slower one.
I can still see that its sending and receiving 2kb every second.
