  • Fix Battery Drain with redsn0w 0.9.6b6 and SAM

The iPhone Dev-Team has released redsn0w 0.9.6b6 for Windows and Mac with a new tweak that avoids the issues like battery-drain and overheating that plague unlocks. Rather than using redsn0w to hacktivate, this version lets users click a "Deactivate" button to remove the patches that affected battery life and push notifications, allowing @sbinger's SAM tool to do the hacktivation.

Sam (@sbinger) Binger, the developer of TetherMe, came up with what he calls Subscriber Artificial Module (SAM), which tricks iTunes and your iPhone into generating official activation tickets even though the unlocked device carries an unofficial SIM. As a result, the lockdownd patches that were required to make hacktivation work with redsn0w are no longer needed, and unlockers can use SAM to hacktivate without taking the battery life hit.

The Dev-Team is making the process easier by adding a "Deactivate" button, which removes the patches and lets SAM take over the hacktivation process. SAM also includes a "stockify" tool to let users of iOS 3.0+ to revert to a stock lockdownd: add http://repo.bingner.com as a repo in Cydia, install "SAM" and "SAMPrefs," and then run stockify in secure shell.

I folowed the instructions on several sites.

      1. Clean Restore of ios 4.2.1
      2. JB with redsnow + install 6.15
      3. Unlock with ultrasn0w 1.2

      Battery Drained VERY FAST.

      4. Installed SAM and SAM_PREFS
      SAM listed activation as FactoryActivated

      5. Used redsn0w to deactivate (Only had deactivate checked)

      6. Ran SAM and deactivated
      SAM listed activation as unactivated.

      7. Synced with iTunes, and phone popped up with message about being activated now.
      SAM listed activation as WildCardActivated.

So it appeared everything went flawlessly, however; push notifications still don't work, and the battery drains nearly faster than I can charge it. 100% to 20% in less than an hour, and the phone stays super hot.

Any ideas? What is the activation supposed to say? Was I supposed to check more boxes than just deactivate?

      Thanks.

When I get to point 7., mine iTunes is continuously 'Accessing iTune Store'. SAM is WildCardActivated

      Any ideas, suggestions?

      Guiness and MrK:

I followed these instructions, which tell you to unlock AFTER you deactivate with Redsn0w and SAM. It worked for me.

All this was after a clean restore (downgrade, in fact) to 4.1. Booting tethered into 4.2 is a pain if you're trying to install and use SAM.

I didn't do a complete restore. I guess I'll have to try that. Kinda sux though. I've spent MANY hours trying out the SAM fix, but it just doesn't seem to work. Still a lot of battery drainage and warm phone.

My iphone is unlocked already, I guess I'll try the full restore.

Followed directions and I suppose its working .Time will tell with the battery life.

Is it safe to uninstall SAM once this process is all done?

Can anyone verify if this battery drain problem really needs a FULL RESTORE? I just restored/jailbroke/unlocked my 3GS 4.1 6.15 not 3 days ago.

      1.Do I have to do i all again but using Redsn0w 9.6b6?
2.Or can I just go directly to the 'Deactivate' in 9.6b6 after installed SAM?

I have a iphone 3GS 4.0.1 JB using jailbreakme.com and unlocked with ultrasn0w. Also activated with att sim.

Is this SAM stuff going to help me with my battery drain? if yes please give me some detailed steps. the steps mentioned here are very confusing...

Mine did that at too, but my phone popped up a quick message saying activated. So I unplugged and plugged back in and iTunes worked normaly.

This is a good question. The guides should explain more about SAM's status messages.

"Wildcard activated" is what you're going for. "Factory activated" appears to mean hacktivated by whatever jailbreak you used, and that's what's causing the battery drain (unless maybe you activated with an AT&T SIM, in which case I don't know what's causing your battery drain).

However, before I downgraded/restored to 4.1, I had "wildcard activated" and still had the battery drain. I think it's possible to have that message without having actually disabled the redsn0w activation.

I would really recommend doing a restore and starting from scratch. If you can do a downgrade to 4.1, that's probably even better because you don't have to re-jailbreak every time the phone has to rebooted in the SAM installation process. It's a pain, but it's worth it.

If you're not sure you have 4.1 SHSH blobs backed up, open Cydia and it will tell you near the top of the home screen. I didn't remember having done it, but I was delighted to discover Cydia had done it for me when I first installed it.

If you activated with an AT&T SIM, you shouldn't be having the battery drain problem. You might want to check your settings, making sure you don't have stuff turned on that you don't need.

      Here's another good tutorial.

I used stockify on my iPhone (I have jailbroken it with redsn0w and unlocked with ultrasn0w, BB from fw 4.1) but when I did reboot it, I was presented with activation screen. How am I supposed to go to settings now ?

This might be a good time to open Itunes with the phone connected and let Itunes activate it. That's the endgame you're going for.

It would be if iTunes wouldn't say that SIM is invalid.

Edit: On SAM's site, there is information: "If iTunes says invalid SIM, you will need to manually select the appropriate carrier under one of the methods besides "Automatic" and click on a SIMID."

But where are these "methods" and SIMID ?

I'm one of the many people whose getting the itunes invalid sim error thing. I'm just wandering the other people that are also getting this error what is their SAM activationstatus?? mine is giving:
      activationstatus:unactivated
Also im in the uk using a uk iphone... wandering if maybe country has something to do with the itunes error/statement.

If anyone has found a solution to the itunes 'unsupported sim' (invalid sim) error could you please reply... i'd really like to solve this.

Oh also i'm using a new iphone 3gs that is locked to the 3 network and hasnt been activated since opened (never been activated).. should i activate with official carrier then install sam and diactivate with redsn0w etc???

      Any help would be appreciated.

I believe these other methods means either manually selecting either ur bundle package (i.e. go through the list until you find your netowrk provider) or filtering by country and network. Basically putting the information in manually... thats what i think it means but it didn't work for me

in SAM for 'method' select 'by bundle name' then go back and select 'bundle' and scroll through until you find your network provider. Then go back and select 'sim id' now for me it only gave me 1 option which was already selected... not really sure what it means anyway. After doing that i believe you have to 'regenerate SIM' might be worth exiting itunes then opening again after regen sim.
This is how i think it should work.. i might be wrong.

      Good luck

Can we delete SAM when we are done from Cydia or is this a module we need to keep installed to operate?

Also, on my 3G, I did not do a full restore. Just deavticed in Redsn0w and did the SAM process. Push is working with no Push Doctor or Inject installed. Phone says Wildcard Activated. Cydia runs just fine. Cannot comment on battery life yet because I have had it on the charger all night. Will notice today when i head out.
