  • BTW - This New Cydia is FAST and Awesome

So you've probably heard there is a new version of Cydia, which is included in the recent tethered jailbreak redsn0w release. We've been testing it and chatting with chpwn and saurik about the differences in it, and thought we'd get a solid list of changes published.

chpwn did a lot of work on many visual tweaks, and as saurik put it "some of my long term performance plans are 'hitting pay dirt', and Cydia is much faster than it was before; that said, it isn't done yet: there's one more thing that I think is going to make a huge difference that isn't even in there yet but should be for the final release." And that's the biggest improvement as far as many are concerned - it's just way faster. Loading the Changes tab in my iPhone 4 is now nearly as quick as the AppStore.

Here's a list of just some of the improvements:
    • reduced loading changes time
    • section remapping optimizations
    • faster reloading data
    • faster, native search
    • uses public SDK classes whenever possible
    • rewritten, faster web views with zooming support
    • changes badge works again
    • more stable webviews (no crashes when queueing)
    • redesigned settings page
    • redesigned stashing page
    • faster scrolling of table views
    • bug fixes
    • ads no longer break the package views until restart
    • much better queueing UI
    • stabler refreshing bar
    iPad improvements:
    • - landscape
    • - popovesr
    • - modal views that cover only a portion of the screen
    • - less annoying errors with bad internet connections downloading packages
    • - updated section mappings, less typo'd sections

A QUICK NOTE - THIS VERSION OF CYDIA IS NOT QUITE READY FOR ALL 3.X USERS, SO ONLY INSTALL IT IF YOU'RE ON 4.X.

This version of Cydia is included in the recent redsn0w release, but if you're on an iPhone 4 or other already jailbroken device, you can actually install it straight from your iDevice. The absolute easiest way to do so is make sure you have iFile and Safari Download Manager installed, then visit http://apt.saurik.com/cydia/debs/cyd...honeos-arm.deb from your device. Remember where you download it to, and navigate there with iFile afterwards. Tap the deb it and choose install - done!

Cydia is growing up so fast.

installing deb files manually is a pain.
you can update Cydia by adding the following repo: http://iphoneroot.com/repo/

BTW: it requires iOS 4.x, might work on 3.2.2, but I don;t want to try. Just update iPad to 4.1.2 it is worth it anyway.

Will all of my packages stay in tact? Or will I have to go through and re-install all of them as if I installed cydia from a fresh jailbreak?

I've updated without any problems. All installed packages remain installed.

      Wow! It sounds awesome!

I'm amazed though that the Backup/Restore functionality from Rock isn't included in the new Cydia release. Any chance it is still in the works? The Cydia/Rock Q&A still says "...we are collaborating on this one...getting the backup feature into Cydia" so hoping it's here soon!

      Thanks!

Couldn't you download AptBackup? Isn't that essentially a Cydia backup?

You bet. But since Saurik said they were working on the same feature in Cydia, I was giving it a little time and waiting on that.

How did the Rock backup work? I didn't really use it at all.

Upgrade works great on i4 running 4.1.2. Only issue is that cydia icon became unthemed and respring didn't fix after repeated attempts.

For those of you still running firmware 3.x and you attempt to update Cydia and get the same failure I got, download the following .deb and install it in the same fashion as you did the new version.

      http://apt.saurik.com/cydia/debs/cyd...honeos-arm.deb
Does this include iPad on 3.2.2 or 3.2.1

Does anyone have the solution to this? It is quite frustrating that I downgraded cydia as you guys said but still have yet to come up with a solution. Some help please?

      Hello.

I tried upgrading to the latest Cydia and have run into severe trouble. I first tried to install it by dropping it into IFunBox, but Cydia would crash upon load up. So I, very smartly, decided to remove Cydia via IFunBox. Then I spent about an hour looking up tutorials to learn how to SSH Cydia onto my iPod touch 4.0.1. It loaded, but the icon is now white and still crashes upon load up.

I navigated to the new Cydia file (that was linked in the first post) via Safari on the iPod and installed it via iFile, but the icon remained white and would still crash. Then I attempted to downgrade by going to an old Cydia deb link and installing via iFile. Icon is still white and still crashes upon loadup. What should I do now?

It is a lot faster when loading...would be stoked if it had some sweet ui changes in the final release...
