  • Jailbreak 4.2.1 with redsn0w 0.9.6b4

MartiniBoy got out in front with this earlier today, but I just wanted to make sure the news was on the main page. The Dev-Team updated redsn0w to version 0.9.6b4 today, which, as Nick detailed yesterday, provides an untethered jailbreak of iOS 4.2.1 for iPhone 3G, older iPhone 3GS, and non-MC iPod touch 2G, and a tethered JB for the iPhone 3GS (new bootrom), iPhone 4, iPad, iPod touch 2G (MC model), iPod touch 3G and the iPod touch 4G. thanks to a combination of pwnage2 exploit, the arm7_go exploit, 24kpwn, and limera1n. For best results, upgrade to iTunes 10.1 first.

Again, it's very important to note that if you unlock, you cannot use redsn0w as it will update your baseband. So if you're an unlocker, or have a newer iDevice and would just prefer the security of an untethered JB, wait for the PwnageTool update before loading 4.2.1. Even if you are ready (like I was) to take the plunge, make sure you back up your SHSH first.

Is anybody having issues jailbreaking the ipad with this? I have tried it about 10 times still getting same problems. I am running redsnow in xp 2 compatibility....my ipad is going into dfu mode definetly...but when redsnow runs and says its doing the jailbreak/ramdisk thing...instead of the usual logo that boots up on my ipad with the downloading jailbreak data, the ipad boots itself up as usual with the apple logo and goes to my homescreen unjailbroken. My ipad just seems like it is rejecting it? Any ideas?

Please post a new topic when the untethered jailbreak for the iPhone 4 releases. I was glad to see this post until I saw it was tethered.

      Thanks

I installed 4.2 and updated to iPad BB, now my 3GS is booting in DFU only, tried updating with itunes, redoing the JB with redsn0w (30+ times) in 3 different computers and I'm still with a nice brick, what can I do??

You either need to go to 4.1 and kick put of recovery with tiny umbrella when you get 1015 error, or restore to a custom 4.2.1

      Another possible solution:
If ur computers Host file is pointing to Saurik, then remove that and restore again. Might work...might not...

      Let us know!

On redsn0w are you ticking "just boot tethered for now". If u have the new bootrom 3GS it's a tethered JB for now. Hope this helps

Thanks for your replies, I already tried going back to 4.1 and it didn't work, also tried booting tethered and nothing.

On the 4.1 (stock file) update itunes says I can't ´cause I'm trying to use an older BB

BTW by DFU I meant the "connetc to itunes" screen on the phone, don't if they are the same status.

No dfu should be a black screen. Recovery mode is the one with the connect to itunes screen.

Ok I updated by iphone 4 to 4.2.1. I jailbroke with the newest redsn0w and put install cydia. I ran redsnow again and check the tethered boot. It goes through the process and redsn0w but on my phone now all I have is the pineapple with the loading sign and it's beeping.

Thats your issue. You need the 4.2.1 firmware to point redsnow to.

Take a look at the 4th and 5th digits of your serial number. this is the week of manufacture. If this is less than 43 you have the older model, which means that it has older baseband software.
