  • Using Veency to Deal With Reception Loss

Veency has been around for quite some time and many of you have probably already used it. Developed by Jay Freeman (Saurik), Veency is a VNC Server for your jailbroken iPhone. VNC is essentially an desktop sharing system that allows you to remotely control another computer. Keyboard and mouse events are sent from one computer to another, while an image is sent back, allowing you to see what is happening in real time.

Since I have recently moved to the mountains, I have found dead spots in different areas, and full in others only a few feet apart. The one that particularly grinds my gears is my new office, which receives a lovely "No Service". However, if I step outside or go upstairs, the reception is great with full bars and 3G.

It had occurred to me that Veency would be a fantastic way to still get reception, while working in the office. And naturally, with everyone these days complaining about reception problems, I figured I'd put together this short guide on getting Veency set up, in the scenario that you've never used a VNC before. So if your can find a good spot where you get great reception, this is where you'll plug your iPhone in (yes you'll want to leave it charging). Make sure Wi-Fi is connected (you'll need this) and download Veency from Rock/Cydia.

Once you've installed Veency, you'll want to set a password for the VNC Server. Go to Settings -> Veency -> Password. That's it, your phone is all set. Make a note of the IP address of your iPhone (if you have SBSettings, just swipe at the top) and leave your iPhone where it gets the best reception.

Now you'll need a VNC Viewer for your PC/Mac. If your on a Mac, head over to Apple - Downloads - Networking & Security - Chicken of the VNC. Chicken of The VNC is free and a great client. If your on a PC, then head over to RealVNC - VNC Viewer Free Edition 4.1 for Windows. VNC Viewer is free and does everything you need.

Once you've installed either of these clients, you will simply enter the IP address of your iPhone. Once a connection is made you should see your iPhone's screen displayed on your PC/Mac. Your mouse will function as the touch input and your keyboard works great for typing.

Voila, you can now text, watch for calls, take snapshots, record video, whatever your heart desires. The streaming is a little bit choppy but it's better than not having any reception at all. Just think of different ways you can use this setup.

What do you use Veency for? I realize there are many different reasons one would use Veency and it's interesting to see what people are doing. For example, I have a friend who actually has no reception in his work office. He leaves his phone in his car, uses MyWi to create a WiFi network, and with Veency he can sneak onto his iPhone without actually looking like he ever uses his phone. Let's hear your story.

Home button is just a right click with the mouse

I was having problems when I would either physically push the lock button or middle-click to lock my screen. It was telling me something about a funky square that couldn't be processed and disconnecting the session. Yes, I was running insomnia, so it wasn't an issue with the wifi disconnecting. Anyway, I discovered that there was a package called veency_fixed in a 3rd party repo (macOSmovil) that when installed took care of the issue. I don't know if it will take care of the mouse cursor tracking on the iPhone 4, as I'm running a 3GS, but it might be worth looking into for those of you having issues.

Ummm i don't think so dude...my screen resolution is at 1360 x 768 at home and 1600 x 900 at work...the iPhone 4 is @ 960 x 640...maybe back in the day when you owned a CRT that can only do a 800 x 600 resolution i can see your point but c'mon now...no one has a 800 x 600 resolution anymore...the lowest popular resolution out there is 1024 x 768 and even with that the iPhone should display better...

it's the ppi that the iPhone 4 is packing...that needs to be translated through Veency or the vnc client somehow and dialed down...if you look at the screenshots from this article at mobilecrunch it's EXACTLY how an iPhone 4 user would see it compared to the 3G/3GS user on screen...

Not only that, but the win key + another button bypassed my android lock entirely.
Any idea how to do this on a mac?

Also I keep playing music by accident?!

The music is from two finger swipe gestures if you are using a macbook. Otherwise perhaps from scrolling the scroll wheel maybe?

For those of you with a black screen. If you set the auto lock to never it doesn't go blank. It worked for me.

Does anyone know of a vnc client for iPad that translates to touch? I'm trying to use veency to connect my iPhone 4 to my iPad using normal touch movements.

mine works okay. let's say the phone is in my pocket.. but how do i -> slide to unlock?

also.. is there anyway to speed up the curser on the PC screen? seems to have a huge delay when moving the mouse around? also during video capture, its very choppy. it would be great to speed that up and use the iphone as an ease drop tool. one more thing. when listining to phone calls... is there a way to increase the volume?

Didn't help me either. My problem is not that the screen goes black when the iPod locks, its that I never get an image at all :/

Veency doesn't seem to work with the iPod 2G or iPhone 3G on iOS4. I get the same problem.

Not complaining...just posting my experience with veency on my iPhone 4...i'm sure something will correct this issue someday...
the cursor misalignment is an issue...
but the big screen size... if you haven't already figured it out can be scaled.
on real vnc using options... go to display options and click on scale to window size

      For blank screen and locked....

this is what i do and it works for me using real vnc

mouse left click on the black screen upper left hand corner (due to cursor misalign)
single right click (at this point the screen comes up.. no more black)

      space bar.. this unlocks screen

I share the frustration on this one... such a great concept being able to control my iphone while it's in my pocket, but the screen resolution just destroys it's useful purpose.

Anyone have any other ideas on this one? It's been 2 months since iPhone 4 came out and Veency hasn't been updated and i don't see any others out there that'll VNC serve on the iphone 4's resolution. :-(
