  • iPhone Called "Most Popular Phone" of the Year

Apple's iPhone was the most popular U.S. mobile device in 2009, according to a report released by Nielsen. Next most popular was the BlackBerry Curve, with Motorola's old-school Razr flip-phone (released in 2004) coming in at third place.

The Apple iPhone 3G made up 4 percent of the "embedded base" of all mobile subscribers, followed by Research in Motion's BlackBerry 8300 series (known as the Curve) with 3.7 percent, and the Razr V3 series with 2.3 percent, according to Monday data from Nielsen.

The report lumped the iPhone 3G and 3GS together, and so the result is somewhat misleading. Overall, BlackBerry as well as LG devices took a larger overall share. The 9530 series, also known as the BlackBerry Storm, came in seventh with 1.4 percent, and the 8100 series, including the Pearl, came in tenth with 1.2 percent.

Two LG phones the LG VX9100 enV2 and the LG Voyager rounded out the top five, with 2.1 percent and 1.7 percent of the market, respectively. Also in the top 10 were the Samsung Rant, the BlackBerry Storm, the LG Dare, the LG Vu series, and the BlackBerry Pearl, which had between 1.5 percent and 1.2 percent.
