  • iPhone 4 is Jailbroken aka The Return of JailbreakMe.com

The iPhone 4 jailbreak is released, and with class.

It was nearly 3 years ago now Apple released the 1.1.1 firmware and the jailbreak community saw it's most memorable jailbreak tool released - JailbreakMe.com. These were the very early days of the Dev Team - the folks involved with the original tweak were hdm/metasploit, rezn, dinopio, drudge, kroo, pumpkin, davidc, dunham, and NerveGas. Some of those guys are still involved in the scene.

The tool jailbroke your iDevice and installed Installer.app (huh? What's that? Cydia wouldn't even be publicly released for a few more months. Installer.app was released in August of 2007) on your homescreen by doing nothing more on the user's end than visiting a website - JailbreakMe.com.

For the past few weeks, comex and the iPhone Dev Team have been hard at work creating the iOS4 / iPhone 4's jailbreak. And it is now officially released - all you have to do is visit JailbreakMe.com once again - this time from your iPhone 4. Oh, and it's not just for the iPhone 4. The renewed JailbreakMe.com now supports a TON of devices:
    • iPod 1G on 3.1.2
    • iPod 1G on 3.1.3
    • iPod 2G on 3.1.2
    • iPod 2G on 3.1.3
    • iPod 2G on 4.0
    • iPod 3G on 3.1.2
    • iPod 3G on 3.1.3
    • iPod 3G on 4.0
    • iPad on 3.2
    • iPad on 3.2.1
    • iPhone 3G on 3.1.2
    • iPhone 3G on 3.1.3
    • iPhone 3G on 4.0
    • iPhone 3G on 4.0.1
    • iPhone 3G[S] on 3.1.2
    • iPhone 3G[S] on 3.1.3
    • iPhone 3G[S] on 4.0
    • iPhone 3G[S] on 4.0.1
    • iPhone 4 on 4.0
    • iPhone 4 on 4.0.1

Much time was put into the development of this jailbreak, and it's smooth as butter - when you visit the website from your iPhone, you're greeted with a slick "Slide to Jailbreak" slider. And... well, that's it. You slide. It jailbreaks your iPhone. Cydia is on your homescreen. No restarting your phone (although when you open Cydia the first time it will do it's normal first-run rearranging of file system and require a restart), no button sequence, just a jailbroken iPhone 4. Or iPhone 3G[S]. Or iPod Touch. Or iPad. You get the picture.

We expect Pwnage Tool to receive a refresh sometime soon for folks who like the added benefits it offers (root partition sizing, boot images, auto-install packages, non-userland jailbreak, etc), but for now there's no official time on a release for that, and my iPhone 4 is jailbroken. 3 cheers for comex and the Dev Team.

    Mod on, legal customizers.

Also - we're hosting planetbeing's new iPhone app, Signal. It's available through the Cydia Store now, and works on 3G, 3G[S], and the iPhone 4. Signal maps the cell towers you are connected to and displays detailed cellular information from the baseband. Pretty nifty app which runs $4.99. The Dev Team and planetbeing don't accept donations - but these guys have put a LOT of work into the iPhone and the most recent unlock and jailbreak! Grab that app in Cydia asap to give back to planetbeing - and get a sweet app as well.

      Ok then.
First google and download firmware 4.0.1 and save where you can easily find it....then, Go to The Firmware Umbrella
on the right hand column, you'll find a windows version. Download, install and open it.

Plug in your iphone 4 and click on advanced and select firmware version 4.0.1 (as Apple is still signing it) and then save your SHSH locally and to cydia servers. You don't have to be jailbroken for TinyUmbrella to save your SHSH.

TinyUmbrella contains a small server that forces iTunes to connect to it instead of going to the apple servers. When you run TinyUmbrella (after your SHSH has been confirmed saved) and start the TSS server, your saved SHSH signatures will be cached up and ready for use. Once TinyUmbrella is running and the TSS server is running. You can open iTunes and start your restore (by pressing SHIFT + Restore) to the firmware version you have SHSH files for(in this case 4.0.1). iTunes will accept the responses as if they had come from Apple itself.

Once your restore is done, go to JailbreakMe (on your iphone), and let it do it's magic. When that is done, remember to open cydia and install Saurik's pdf patch, PrivaCy, winterboard and sbsettings (these I find to be most important) then you can install whatever else you wish and you're all done!

BTW, the information I posted is accurate...just didn't think restoring to 4.0.1 would still work until I tried it....nearly done installing all the apps
I meant the whole SHSH blob hoopla was irrelevant in my case... since I didn't need it to downgrade.

Im not trying to bang on you, you have posted some good stuff in this thread and the information you posted was "correct" but you obviously didn't know what you were talking about in this instance, because as you have confirmed my way works. maybe you should have given it a shot before saying I was posting inaccurate info. next time maybe give it a try, then feel free to chime in.

Hey guys, been trying to jailbreak my iphone 3Gs 4.0 (New Bootrom) since Jailbreakme came out. The problem is that Safari keeps crashing to the Home Screen. I slide to jailbreak and I see the background of jailbreakme.com and then Safari just closes.

I've tried resetting my network settings and resetting my cookies and cache and nothing seems to work so far.

      Thanks for any help...

Clear your browsing history, cache from settings on your iphone, and refer to my last post on this page... make sure you're restored to 4.0.1 and follow my instructions....let's know how you get on

No worries dude... point taken...The constant availability of accurate information and helpful, knowledgeable people on this site is what sets it apart from the rest. Let's continue to keep it that way

Tried clearing everything already. I'll try updating to 4.0.1 first then.

I tried downloading iOS 4.0.1 (from two sources) and installing it but when I tried that, iTunes gave me an error 3194. So then I tried updating to iTunes 9.2.1 from 9.2, and still the same error. What could I try next?

Read and follow my instructions three posts back and you should be fine (hopefully Apple is still signing 4.0.1). use iTunes 9.2. You need to have downloaded 4.0.1 (do a google search for it) before starting the restore.

If you're already on 4.0.1, why do you need to restore?? You need to stay on iTunes 9.2...What baseband do you have? You can find that under settings>about...scroll to the bottom. If it is anything other than 05.13.04, i.e 05.12.01 or 05.11.07 (though I doubt that) then try using spirit or pwnage tool (here is a link to spirit: Jailbreak iPad 3.2 & 3.1.3 with Spirit (Download Here)) As long as apple is still signing 4.0.1 you should be ok (assuming you didn't have your SHSH stored), otherwise your only hope would be to get your SHSH from Cydia or TinyUmbrella...but only if they were stored there in the first place.

So I have my I4 thats jailbroke, I am about to buy my wife one,
but hers will have the latest update. Can I use my SHSH to downgrade hers so it can be jailbroke?

out of the box, the first thing you should do is slide to JB, after a short activation, then "make my life easier". I don't think your SHSH will help anyone except you. otherwise there would be no point in EVERYBODY saving their stuff. 10 phones in the world would have been enough. No, your SHSH is unique, just like you.

Nope, you'll have to wait for the next JB. I'm in the same boat. I upgraded my 3GS yesterday to a 4 and it was preloaded with 4.0.2.

I used jailbreakme.com and it worked fine other than terminal keeps crashing when I open it.

      I got 3GS, 4.0, on 5.13.04

Someone was telling me I should now go use ultrasnow. Now I'm still new to the jailbreak community, but why would you use ultrasnow?

      Isn't jailbreakme.com the jailbreak?

Somebody please tell me why I would use ultrasnow if I had to and what's the difference between ultrasnow and jailbreakme.com.

Sorry guys, don't mean to be such a noob! Still trying to learn the ways of the force!

      Thanx

Mobile Terminal does not work with iOS4
UltraSn0w unlocks your phone to use SIMs from other networks. If you have no intention of doing this you should not use UltraS0ow.

And to continue with what confucious was saying, you still don't neccecarily need ultrasn0w to have an unlocked iPhone, some are factory unlocked
