  • GeoHot Jailbreaks iPhone 4, Says Shove Off

GeoHot - or as his mother knows him, George Hotz - has jailbroken the iPhone 4, and tossed up an image on his blog today of the 4 running Cydia. He is also just plain annoyed with the masses of people constantly barraging with one single question "hey man when are you going to release a jailbreak I want the Cydia that give the apps that give me the total power I can donate $5 when is it released" Says GeoHot: "As far as a release goes, it probably won't happen from me."

He dispels a couple rumors from the web as well - "limera1n is little more than a raindrop on a website; it was never mentioned by me previous to this post." and also "pwned4life is a complete invention of some blogger in a basement somewhere. When I said pwned for life, I was referring to the original iPhone, 3G, and Touch; which of course are, by the aptly named PwnageTool."

There's a single sentence which seems to sum up GeoHot's annoyance with jailbreaking about now at the bottom of his post: "Again, please don't ask for release dates. Every person that does makes me want to release a little bit less." And not to disappoint Señor Hotz, the comments on the post are already littered with folks asking how to jailbreak various devices. I chatted with GeoHot this morning, and he basically rehashed the same annoyance he published this morning - which makes sense. I mean, give the guy a break - if he had a release or a release date, he'd publish it. Repeating the same question over and over to him (or comex, or planetbeing, or MuscleNerd, or any of these guys) isn't going to speed anything up. They're all working for you, so give the guys a break and wait patiently for a public tool - it IS coming, from whomever. C'est la vie... anyway, that's what we're for. Feel free to ask right here if the jailbreak is released.

Nice to notice it seems the Cydia in the picture is already in high-res for the iPhone 4, although with some weird aliasing in the background. Looks like Cydia is ready for iPhone 4 when iPhone 4 is ready for Cydia.

Apple has had 4 iphones and many many updates to forever kill the jailbrak, but it can't or won't. This cat-and-mouse game is simply worthless, and I doubt GeoHot is trying to bait Apple.

I refuse to believe that Apple really really wants jailbreaking to cease. Jailbreaking keeps around a very intelligent and tech-savvy crowd that shells money on $300 phones. Why would Apple want that customer base to go away to Android.

I refuse to believe that Apple can't find a way to shut any exploit down. Maybe I am wrong, and maybe GeoHot is trying to bait apple, but if GeoHot is a genius for jailbreaking iOs$, then Apple people must be gods for inventing it.

Do i have one now, NO. But yes I upgraded my ole ladies and pre ordered her 32GB. Even though we all told her it was going to be a POS from the get go, because Apple is famous for making crap quality first hand. And 2 days later she sold it for $400 (goes to show how eager she was to get rid of it). Now she is back on her Nokia 7610b (might i ad has much better reception than her Isuck 4 did).

LMAO. I dont think very many people will agree with you that your Isuck 4 has better reception than a 3GS. Have u seen all the BS problems those things have? Let me guess, we're all blind?

Just because im unlocked, doesnt mean i use T-Mobile. It could be that i'm unlocked for various other reasons that I would rather Apple not know about.

Boy your posts really makes me laugh. I'm sorry that you got so much hatred for the iPhone 4 for some reason but please stop making up these silly little posts of yours. Your lady never got an iPhone 4 nor sold it for only $400. If she did then it would of been a lot smarter for her to just return it other then to be stuck with a new 2 year contract with little to no profit. I call it BS.

I'd just have to put it like this..., YES!!! I think it was a bad move to show a "supposedly", jailbroken iPhone 4. And then say don't ask when it's release is possible. More or less, I won't be the one to release it. But, look at it this way.... It WILL be done!!! And we will all get to enjoy it. Let's all let the great one wallow in his achievements, because respect is due!!! Imagine you released it, and then got 100 emails an hour asking when it's gonna be released. He's young, and he's brilliant. Please leave SOME room for error.
I don't agree with the fact that he dangled a "picture"... That we have "already seen" in front of us, but I CAN understand his frustration of world wide questioning.
I agree that it was not the best way to announce the iphone4 JB...., but at least we have some hope right?????

Geohot may be a bright guy, but he's still a total tool. He isn't the only hacker on the scene, and with his attitude it just isn't worth it. Go F*** yourself while we wait for someone else to release a jailbreak.

First off, good job to GeoHot if he really has jailbroken iPhone 4, kid has talent.
Though it wouldn't surprise me if the kid has been contacted by Apple, not to release the jailbreak, and maybe even hand it over to them so they can find the exploit and close the hole. Money can persuade anyone. Im sure Apply would be happy to pay him a lot more than what he earns in donations.

Hopefully I'm wrong but hey who knows?

He was offered $10k to produce an unlock and accepted the challenge. MN and I asked him not to take money from someone we really disapprove of he produced the unlock because he had said he would but turned down the money.

      Money is not his motivation.

I am surprised this thread is still going.

Comex has the jailbreak to release. The whole Apple/Geo conspiracy is ludicrous.

Geohot is a very smart person indeed. But in my opinion he does come across as a bit of a arse.

There he goes again, dangling the jailbreak carrot in front of the hungry masses. Leave him alone and he will release it. He always does. Now is his time to show off and say look at me" I have a jailbroken iphone4."

don't forget that he said he has a bootrom exploit. Maybe that's the reason we won't see a release from him?

Were you around when GeoHot was offered $10,000 not to release his unlock for 3.1.2? Yeah he turned down $10,000 and released it. Apple isn't going to shell out that much to keep a jailbreak quiet for a little while longer.

Even if they did, someone is going to discover the exploit sooner or later and it's going to go public.
