  • 4th-Gen iPhone in Summer 2010?

Recent hints of an upcoming new iPhone model got a boost today thanks to a terse and enigmatic Tweet from a popular mobile-phone blogger, saying only:
Foxconn received order for next generation iphone
Foxconn is the manufacturer Apple uses for the iPhone, as well as for the Mac mini and the iPod line.

Rumors have been circulating for the past few months about a fourth-generation iPhone being launched in 2010. Just a few weeks ago, an iPhone carrying the hardware designation "3,1" was spotted on the San Francisco Bay Area transit system. An order placed today would result in manufacturing being ramped up on schedule for an early-summer 2010 launch of the device. If this took place, it would fit perfectly into Apple's history of product launches: the original iPhone was released on June 29th of 2007, with the 3G coming on July 11, 2008 and the 3GS on June 19, 2009. References to an "iPhone3,1" were first discovered in iPhone firmware files back in August, and Apple had similarly begun testing the iPhone 3GS (iPhone2,1) in October of 2008, about 8 months ahead of its launch.

The report comes from Mobile-review’s Eldar Murtazin, the Russian blogger who has had a good history of scoops on new mobile devices. He has, however, no track record when it comes to Apple phones, so it's hard to know how much credibility to place in this report. Murtazin followed up his brief Tweet with another, in reply to a follower, that asserted that the new hardware would support multitasking, further bolstering rumors that the 4G iPhone would be based on a PA Semi processor.

Following the report, the rumor mill churned with speculation about the new phone. A front-facing camera (for video calls) was a popular idea, along with a 1GHz processor, LTE support and a higher resolution display, possibly OLED... even a hardware QWERTY keyboard. Obviously, at this point, nothing is known and little can be inferred to this sketchy assertion.

Foxconn is the trade name of the Taiwan based firm Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. (Ltd.). They are the largest manufacturer of electronics and computer components worldwide, and mainly manufactures on contract to other companies.

I hope they improve the signal! I can get a much better signal from my old Nokia N95 (3G and edge) and an even older SE Cybershot K790 (edge only)..

I'm sick of my 3G, but I'm not changing it until the new one comes out.

Apple will do what they always do.. make just enough "micro" improvement to make people upgrade but they won't give you everything all at once or you would have no reason to upgrade AGAIN a year later. The screen will remain the same size and resolution. There will NOT be a slide out keyboard (this is very non-Apple). I doubt the processor and RAM will get upgraded as the 3GS runs super smooth and never runs out of memory.. a processor speed boost would just hurt battery life. Maybe we'll get wireless N capability. The phone casing will be redesigned of course. They'll give customers about 20% of what they're complaining about.

Yeah, i've realized that after the 3G then 3GS. Right now i'm more interested in OS improvements rather than hardware...Although, a flash for the camera would be nice. The speed of the 3GS is fast enough. But for them to add the possibility of multitasking they would need to increase the memory and possibly the processor.

Or maybe app developers could start creating apps that can save your settings even after exiting and then bring you back to where you once were after it is reopened? I know some apps do this already. If this is incorporated in all apps there would not be a need for so much multitasking and the lag that comes with it.

But idk... i'm not that knowledgeable when it comes to this stuff.. just a thought.

Why on Earth would you want it to look like that? Top heavy and how are you going to use a dock? Switch it around making the bottom the bigger part and the top the thinner part and you have issues with the 3.5mm headphone jack and camera placement. Can't really move it to the bottom because of the stereo speakers and dock connector. Moving the headphone jack to the side would be plain dumb. Also the GPS is situated around the headphone jack. It would also feel weird holding it sideways for apps/games that work in landscape. People have issues with the Palm Pre when opened due to it being top heavy. The device has to be balanced and having a design like that adds numerous placement problems for what is already included in the iPhone.

Front facing camera would ruin the aesthetics of the look from the front. If it was done very subtly maybe, but I don't see it happening next gen. Plus there is placement problems with the headphone jack, power button, current camera on the back and the ear piece for calls. You can't just stick everything into something that is already small to begin with and have a good experience. Plus more moving parts means more chance of breakage. The phone isn't hollow inside, able to take anything that you can think up to include.

Why are so many people complaining about apple releasing so many generations? TONS of companies do that on a regular basis especially HTC and RIM. Virtually every electronics company does this. And car companies...how else would they make money?
