  • iPod Nano & Classic Being Phased Out: No More ClickWheel Games from Apple

    It appears that Apple is slowly trying to phase out the older iPods that feature the vintage Click Wheel. I find this to be kind of an ******* move considering they just re-released the nano with video support, which still uses the Click Wheel. So anyone who enjoys games on their iPod Nano, unfortunately there will be nothing new to look forward to.

    Joystiq reported on some new games coming out soon, and happened to mention that the new iPhone games contain touch-enabled versions of both the original Song Summoner that was a popular click wheel iPod game and Song Summoner 2, which was never released, apparently because Apple has abandoned the click wheel game format.

    The AppStore still offers a large list of iPod Click Wheel Games from our trusty iTunes Store, but no new games have been released since Cake Mania 3 in February of 2009. Apple had introduced iPod Click Wheel Games with the release of iTunes 7 in September 2006 and a total of nearly 50 games were released over the next 2 and a half years.

    However, all of this being said, it could of course just be rumour, as Apple has never officially acknowledged that ClickWheel compatibility will be discontinued. Even so, this does NOT mean the oldschool iPods' days are outnumbered, it only means that Apple apple's focus is elsewhere. Being as successful as the store is, I would image they would want to keep the flow of apps and games coming, even the older ones as I'm sure they still sell.

    Of course none of this comes as a surprise, as it's quite clear the Touch Screen is their focus and future. But I still can't help but think it would be a very bad move to discontinue this, as there is still a large amount of people with iPod Nano's.

    One can speculate that there are new iPods coming once again I guess...

      hmmm. if theyre gonna be getting rid of these. expect some discounts coming soon.

      I would agree that Apple is an ******* for this move, as my mom just bought her Nano video. I mean all she's does is the music and video but still. That's just not quite right. What about firmware updates, will it be affected?

      I remember when the first iPod came out almost a decade ago, or is it more than a decade already, whatever? (I still have two of them somewhere on my stash. broken.), it was pretty hip when you have one of those iPod. Now, there's that rumor about the Apple Tablet which is supposedly half iPod touch/iPhone-half Macintosh. And new iPods coming out? That I want to know. Posibly video itouches, HD camera, back and front camera...?

      I would assume if these were actually being phased out, that means no more firmware updates unless absolutely necessary.

      I have a few games purchased for my iPod Video but I don't own that anymore. I'd play my old ClickWheel games once iClassic with iPod games is release. Guess before we can get the game update we'll need the app. Taking longer than I though forthe dev to release it

      I think phasing out the iPod Classic would be an extremely stupid decision, it is currently the largest-capacity iPod that they offer. Granted that the iPhone and iPod Touch will surprass it in the future, there are just some people who can't be bothered with a touchscreen. My older brother, for instance, chose the iPod Classic solely because it didn't have a touchscreen. I can completely understand his decision to do so because having a touchscreen adds a far larger screen area that can crack and the nuisance of having to make sure your fingers are completely free of any kind of substance before attempting to do anything is sort of a nag, not to mention that the iPod Classic feels a lot more solid in your hands.

      That's a bad move from Apple. It's a bad idea to phase them out because some people dislike the iPhone or iPod touch and rather go to them. Song Summoner 2 will never be released. Even though it gets released on the iPhone and iPod touch, it won't as good as the original because it will violate the SDK terms and a change will be required. That is access to your music library.

      I got my first iPod (30GB) like 4 years ago and bought 2 games for it. Vortex and Sudoku. They were fun. Sudoku was easy once you got used to it. Vortex was fun. I played that game for hours at a time. Even some of my friends got hooked on that game. But now that I have the iPhone and the type of games that come in the App Store, I'll never look back. Finally gave my bro my 30GB iPod once I got my 32GB iPhone.
