  • Best Buy Employee "Confirms" iPhone Coming to Sprint

A BestBuy employee is "confirming" that Sprint is about to carry the iPhone. And a formal announcement about the carrier welcoming the iPhone to its 4G network could come as early as next month's WWDC conference, which - as we learned today - will kick off June 7th with a keynote address from Apple CEO Steve Jobs. So will Jobs unveil the Sprint iPhone at the conference?

According to coverage today from Redmond Pie, which amalgamates a variety of morsels of information from sources and leaks, the employee confirming the Sprint iPhone works at a Best Buy outlet in Pennsylvania, although a particular store was not cited as it would violate the company's "privacy policy." Nonetheless, the source claims that shelf displays will surface within a time-frame that appears to neatly coincide with the start of the WWDC.

Historically, however, Best Buy employees are notoriously left in the dark regarding major announcements and product releases. Even ahead of the iPad's release, very few credible stories - or even leaks - were traced back to Best Buy and the store's myriad workers. Apple, however, does have a stellar relationship with Best Buy and, for this reason, it isn't altogether inconceivable that an employee could be privy to advanced information - either by accident or design.

Without question, a 4G capable 4th generation iPhone would be a massively appealing reality for millions of current or potential smartphone buyers. But for the very reason that some say its simply "too good to be true," perhaps we will have to concur with that assessment until more concrete evidence of a Sprint iPhone surfaces in the days and weeks to come.

In any case, I'll bet those Sprint iPhones will stay locked.

Whether true or not ..... it is nearly impossible for Apple to prepare (and control) everything necessary to adequately develope, advertise and promote a major offering. Imagine how much more difficult it is when a major reseller (Best Buy) gets involved? If it is happening, there are a dozen (and more likely 100) Best Buy employees and their contractors that are aware in order to prepare for the launch. These events don't just magically appear We will see how good Best Buy can keep secrets.

WTF? How can a Best Buy employee confirm that the iPhone is coming to Sprint? Unless Apple told them which I doubt.

oh my god....apple is getting stupider each day. why is it for sprint???? not Verizon???? luckily verizon lets you use any phone compatible with their network and program it with verizon, but then you don't get the cheap contract price. that's just stupid. if they were gonna make a CDMA iphone, at least make it on America's most reliable 3G network.

      Actually Sprint is CDMA!

      1. I think it's more likely for Sprint to get the iphone than Verizon it would be a way for Apple to stick to Verizon even more. Besides Verizon has become a real hardcore android carrier.

      2. If Sprint gets the iphone it would be the best thing since slice bread. Just do the math with Sprint you could potentially have 4 iphones on a family plan for about $150 a month, that includes unlimited everything.

      3. Sprint has more 3G than AT&T with access to the Verizon voice network and ALLTELL EV-DO network and other roaming partners. So theoretically Sprint has the most coverage than any other carrier when you include their roaming partners.

      4. Sprint's 3G is faster than Verizon's 3G for 1/2 the price.

Please delete this post! I work for Best Buy and assist in Best Buy Mobile often. It is extremely unlikely that a Best Buy employee would know of this happening, not even Apple employees are informed about new products until days in advance. Displays do arrive around two weeks prior to the launch date, however there is no way to confirm this rumor. Whoever said this may have just wanted to spark rumors.. Although Best Buy employees are much more credible than others, all in all, this was a huge waste of a post.

Sprint doesn't have 3G, they have 4G because they are a WiMAX to LTE cellular service! not CDMA... which is why it's much faster...

I could insult you like you did to everyone else. But i don't think i have to, your post speaks for itself.

Ummm Sprint is CMDA for most of it's network. It only just recently moved a small number of it's areas to WiMax. So still a very wide portion of their area will only get CMDA 3G service.

The Sprint PCS network operates a combination 2G & 3G wireless network, using the 1xRTT/EVDO standard, which is part of the Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) standard
Sprint has branded its WiMAX network '4G', although this is potentially confusing to customers. The ITU-R definition of 4G is a download speed potential of 1Gb/second, which Sprint's WiMAX network does not currently achieve.
Sprint's pages states that peak speeds are only 10Mbps, average is 3-6.
