  • AT&T, Verizon Agree to Stop Suing Each Other

AT&T and Verizon today agreed to drop the lawsuits they've been pursuing against each other over advertising claims. The US District Court in Atlanta dismissed AT&T's suit hoping to block Verizon's "there's a map for that" ads, and the US District Court for the Southern District of New York closed an earlier Verizon complaint that would have shut down AT&T's criticisms of its "most reliable" claims. Both cases were dismissed without prejudice so either company can sue the other one again, at any time.

AT&T's lawsuit accused Verizon of misleading advertising when they showed a map that only displays 3G coverage. AT&T said this left the impression that AT&T service works only in those areas, which is a small subset of its total coverage. Verizon's response said that the ads made it clear that the maps only showed 3G coverage, but AT&T had sued to have the ads blocked while the trial was going on. US District Judge Timothy Batten denied AT&T’s request, saying that while the ads might be “sneaky” or “clever,” they are “literally true.” Meanwhile, Verizon came out with new ads that suggested the iPhone was limited by AT&T's smaller 3G coverage and poor service quality.

Neither AT&T nor Verizon has provided any reason why they're choosing to drop the lawsuit at this time. AT&T's inability to stop the ads, though, made it a losing battle for them to continue a lawsuit that, if anything, drew more attention to Verizon's argument. We'll see if the ad wars cool down or heat up as the holiday season goes into full swing.

      Only time will tell.
I doubt that will happen, though, because Verizon likes to have lots of control over their phones, and Apple likes to have lots of control over their products, so it'd be a tough tango for those two.

I hope the iPhone will work for Verizon soon. I honestly hate AT&T.

I have used the droid quite a bit and I'm not really too impressed overall. On paper it sure has nice features, but the OS is still not even close to the cleanliness and usability of the iPhone OS. Sure the phone has a nice screen, but when the OS has such a horribly ugly GUI what good is it really? I got my buddy's Iphone killer to lock up 3 times doing very basic functions. Little issues, but overall it is still not ready for iPhone OS smashing by any means. Decent phone, but not what it is hyped to be.

On a side note I basically compare the phone with my JB iPhone because I do feel that the stock iPhone leaves wayy too much on the table to compete feature wise. My JB iPhone does just about everything the Droid claims, and does it smoother and easier by far.

      JB iPhone 3GS > Drooooiiid :-)

As much as I dislike Apple, I'd have to agree. But out of the box, I'd rather have a Droid (or Milestone, so I can still use AT&T). The biggest problem with the Droid is just the fact that its processor is not up to spec with the other features of the device. It should've been at least a 600MHz processor, if not 800 or better. If they'd just done that, then they'd be golden. What I would love to see from HTC is something like the HD2, but instead with a 16:9 widescreen, and the same or better resolution than the Droid, but I want it to come out about a year from now, once Android has had LOTS of time to be refined, like the iphone's had two and 1/2 years by now.

Exactly.. I love what the new Android phones are bringing to the market for competition, and I am DEF one that would jump ship if a Jailbreak was not possible. I'm not a fan of the refinement of android at all yet, but like you said, they will get better as some time gets under their belt. I just do so much on my iPhone that I couldn't do without a JB that it would just kill me to go back. Interested to see what apple comes up with for the 4G.

To stay on topic, I still have a hard time seeing apple go verizon after all the Droid stuff, but who knows anymore! I am totally happy with my AT&T here in Phx tho!

Furthermore, Apple and AT&T's exclusivity contract may continue to hold for years to come, if both of them project the overall benefits to outweigh any downfalls.

I expected the iPhone OS to operate smooth like their OSX but my iPhone seems to act weird at times. Going to the home screen, if it feels like it, it will go there smoothly. Most of the time it just jumps to the home screen instantly without the cool transition effect...What the heck? 2 things i hate the most. 1: map always trys to locate current location every time i open the map app. 2: Safari closing all of my tabs and goes to home screen for no reason.

I quite agree with this statement!
I had a problem with connectivity with my iphone and while I was at the AT&T Store, they said I had to go to Apple even though I bought my phone from AT&T. After the usual shenanigans at a "Genius Bar" (How pretentious is that?!), they replaced my phone. All of this took 2 days...

"Mac Genius" isn't an oxymoron, in the sense of someone who is a genius and works for Apple, but neither could ever be related to the other. I've had discussions with numerous Apple employees, including several 'Geniuses', and one of them didn't even know what SLi was, none the less if it's supported on any Mac models. I had to ask at least 3 or 4 people before someone could say for sure that it wasn't supported. Yes, they're decently capable with Apple computers (hardware and software), and often do have a bit of understanding of the inner workings of one, but I certainly have more knowledge about computers and related topics than the Mac Geniuses I've met. I have a completely ingenious idea for Apple: grow a pair, and let go of your child (all Apple software).

*Epiphany* That's the analogy...Apple treats their products almost the same way an over-protective father would treat his daughter: "Yes, I know you married her, but I'm not relinquishing the key to her chastity belt."

Please Verizon, don't let up on them now!!! Nothing wrong with a little public bashing for selling a device and service that doesn't meet all of its promises.

Here's a commercial idea: Create a commercial with a hundred post cards attached to AT&T turtle a$$es wandering around aimlessly over 2G networks while Verizon rabbits (with Andriod software driven phones) are jumping from 3G tower to 3G tower over them!

Yea, both of those problems you are upset about were solved with the upgraded hardware on the S model. I had a 2G for over a year and you have to keep the RAM free as possible at all times to prevent apps shutting down. It's not jittery feeling because of the OS, mostly just hardware. It's actually pretty amazing how laggy and slow the original hardware is in comparison to the S hardware. Droid is laggy and choppy in areas and that is with the newer, faster hardware of any android phone.

You can disable location services in SBsettings(if jailbroken) as well.

Off topic, but I like the pic in your signature. Only prob is once you make a selection you better want to stick with it because the home button is not avail to close the app lol.
