  • Qualcomm in Talks with Apple for 2010 iPhone?

DigiTimes, the Taiwan-based site that reports on the East Asia mobile phone industry, has another report out today regarding Qualcomm chips in Apple phones. According to their sources, Qualcomm is talking to Apple about its new hybrid mobile chips. However, previous rumors that the phones would be released by summer of next year may not pan out, according to this report.

Qualcomm's new hybrid chip allows phones to use the networks of CDMA/EVDO carriers - such as Verizon and Sprint in the United States - and UMTS/HSPA+ carriers including AT&T and T-Mobile. In addition, the same chip supports LTE, which is a network technology that major carriers have announced plans to implement starting next year.

The chips are not expected to make it into the summer 2010 iPhone release, as the field test process will have to continue at least that long if the chips are only entering production now. The DigiTimes report indicates that Qualcomm is, rather, looking for a deal with Apple for "future cooperation".

Qualcomm - though the largest fabless chip manufacturer in the world - is looking to regain market share since many popular smartphones use its competitors' technology: the iPhone uses Infineon chipsets, the BlackBerry uses Freescale and the Palm Pre is based on Marvell chips. Qualcomm supplies 3G chips to LG, Samsung and HTC.

The first phones using Qualcomm's hybrid chip are anticipated to go on sale in late 2010.

Wow could you imagine having this chip in your phone and unlocking it to use ANY cell network out there?

Hopefully hybrid chips will one day carriers work together and allow someone on ATT to use Verizons 3G network in some areas.

The next version probably won't come until Summer and the hybrid is just a rumor.

What's up with the title. You clearly state in the article that there isn't even the slightest possibility that this hybrid chip will be released in the next iteration of the iPhone. Clearly 2011 is the earliest reasonable target, as you state yourself. Why then call the article "Qualcomm in Talks with Apple for 2010 iPhone?". Why not change the 2010 to 2011?

^^ Ya its safe to say that this chip will NOT be in the iPhone release this summer but will be out in the 2011 version.

Here come the rumors. First, new iphone (3,1) testing in San Francisco. Now, It's Qualcomm. If verizon carry iPhone, I will switch after my At&T contract is finish.

Do you want to freak out some more?....geez! What happened to politely asking about something. Instead you jump straight to criticizing and slamming his post. He's doing you a service by searching this stuff out and posting on the site, maybe show a little gratitude.

Anyway! This sounds pretty cool, one phone fits all kind of thing.

They may be revolutionary, but you can bet good money they're going to be utter crap. There is nothing good that has ever come out of Qualcomm, just a bunch of chips that look good on paper and woefully underperform in real world usage. They've held back HTC WinMo phones for years. If the iPhone goes Qualcomm, it'll be a damn shame.

Will never happen, as long as the iPhone remains exclusive with AT&T.

"in talks" moron. The title doesn't mention that it was going to come out in 2010. It only mentions of "talks" quit being such a jacka$$!
