  • SnapTap: Take Photos Like a Real Camera using the iPhone Volume Controls

Last week we covered a new app on the scene called Snappy, which allowed you to take properazzi style photos by snapping a quick photo by simply pressing and holding on the top status bar in any application.

Although Snappy is more of a camera Add-on, and SnapTap is more of a tweak. SnapTap, by Tom Zickel, allows you to take pictures using the volume controls instead of using the small camera button onscreen. This app is intended to also work with any other camera apps you might use, which really makes this tweak a fantastic addition. I personally always found it ridiculous when taking a photo by tapping the screen. Using the volume controls to snap your photo should have been a built in feature, but alas, here we are, Tom brings us a great tweak to use your phone in a more Camera-Like manner.

The idea behind this tweak is so that you can hold your iPhone like a normal camera and use the volume buttons as the shutter control. It also makes self portraits incredibly easier, and also works for activating the video camera and stopping it.

UPDATE: This does NOT affect the volume when using it. I snapped like 10 pictures while listening to music and the volume stayed where it was.

You will be required to have 3.0 or higher on your iPhone, as it has not been tested on anything below.

    Features:
    * Take photos easily by using the volume controls.
    * Finally take self-portrait pictures without figuring where to press.
    * Tested with the built-in camera taking app, should work with others as well.
You can download & purchase SnapTap from the Cydia Store for $.99. This tweak is available on the BigBoss repo.

snappys redundent anyways. all you really need to do is set home button to camera. double tap home and bam! from any app you get to camera. 1-2 sec tops. works great for me. why pay $1.99 for essentially the same function [keep things simple] as for snapture they took away my paid app and stole $9.99 from me when they went apple store...so those thieves can shove it!

occipital had the decency [when they pulled clearcam from cydia] to tell me to just re-add their repo and i could download again. stand up fellows @occipital

so for apps that really matter. looks like only the native iphone camera is functioning.

      [no offense nick]

      Hello all,
I tried it and it worked as advertised. Volume control not affected. Moreover, I tried it on native camera application and Camera Genius application (3rd party) and worked on both.
      Definitely recommended

Thos 'thieves' as you put it were very good at emailing all registered users telling them how to get their money back if they had to pay again from the app store.
The author did his best - but he is only one person. He certainly never intended to rip anyone off and I'm not sure what more he could have done.

Do you know what i like best about this tweak....
If i have the iphone headphones plugged in with mic and volume controls,
I can use the volume buttons on the in line mic to snap a pic.

^^ i appreciate the effort in your post. unfortunatelly the link from your original post no longer shares any information.

after looking at some of your responses to peoples questions and a link to snaptures Q&A it seems they were only offering for 1 week [looks like in september] so im out of luck. still doesnt explain why they didnt contact me or at least explain via a response to my emails that i sent to them.

well seeing as how the photoshop app does all the picture customizations on my iphone that i need and its not worth buying a second time around. [even though its like $1.99 or $2.99 on sale right now] im just gonna stick with clearcam as my secondary. RIP snapture.

Tried it with two third-party apps, Camera Plus and Tripod. It captured photos with both, however with Tripod it took the picture immediately rather than starting the image stabilizing process, which pretty much makes the app pointless. Still a useful tweak though.

Of course if you wanted to change the volume of the music while you were this app ... you would be out of luck!

You would only be out of luck if your camera app was open. This tweak does not automatically snap a picture anytime you press the volume controls. You need to have the Camera app open to use this function.
