  • iPhone OS 4.0 Jailbreak is Released

One week from the day Apple announced OS 4.0, the iPhone Dev Team releases a jailbreak. This jailbreak is for developers to get ahead start on updating their apps for 4.0.

Details from: redsn0w 0.9.5 BETA [iPhone Dev Team]

This is a beta release of redsn0w targeted at developers of jailbroken apps.

Please not that this beta is not meant for the average end-user. There are many things “broken” with jailbroken apps in the 4.0beta1 environment right now, and this beta redsn0w allows the developers behind those jailbroken apps to fix their software before the general public gets iphoneOS 4.0.

Because it's meant for JB app developers, this beta redsn0w does not perform hactivation. You'll need a properly-registered developer UDID with Apple to get past the activation screen. For similar reasons, there is no Windows version of this beta redsn0w (since apps are developed on MacOSX). Please don't pirate Apple software.

Anyone other than developers of jailbroken apps porting their software to 4.0beta1 should still be using our previously-released redsn0ws for 3.0 through 3.1.3
    This BETA release supports:
    • iPhone 3G only (for now)
    • Mac OSX only (for now)
    • the 4.0beta1 FW only (for now)

YOU SHOULD STAY CLEAR OF THIS BETA SOFTWARE IF YOU RELY ON A CARRIER UNLOCK. That's because the beta redsn0w works only if your device has already been upgraded to the stock 4.0beta IPSW from Apple, which contains a baseband update. If you installed that IPSW, you've already lost the carrier unlock until the next planned release of ultrasn0w and blacksn0w.

YOU SHOULD STAY CLEAR OF THIS BETA SOFTWARE IF YOU RELY ON A CARRIER UNLOCK!

    EDIT:

    Multitasking on your 3G

Once you are jailbroken, navigate to /System/Library/CoreService/SpringBoard.app/N82AP.plist

Open the plist and change the multitasking key to = True

if the multitasking key is not there, add it

Exactly what I was thinking. This forum is about to get flooded with broken apps because they are not written for 4.0 yet.

Who's ready for all the people complaining that stuff isn't working properly?
Well, I am working on an app, but I have a 3GS, can I complain?

Darn it. I thought the jailbreak for 4.0 was supposed to also work for 3.1.3 (3GS). Maybe that was someone else' jailbreak "exploit". I just remember the argument of them not wanting to waste releasing it for 3.1.3 because Apple would patch it before 4.0 was officially released. I don't know...I've read so much stuff on here in the past few weeks that I'm starting to confuse myself I guess. Haha.

This is great news!.. However, what about (at least) a tethered jailbreak for iPhone 3GS devs with firmware 4.0? This would be handy.

4.0 beta is cool. And I am a developer. It was too glitchy for me. Wouldn't let me connect to my home wifi, download full emails, or mms through the photos app, on and on. So i'm back to 3.1.3. Hopefully Beta2 fixes those issues for me. There was nothing really worth it to me. The 4.0 OS just seems like an over-worked mess.

You guys know what this release is for right? It's so the developers of jailbroken apps can fix their apps before 4.0 is officially release and officially jailbroken with a new exploit. It's not for just anyone.

P.s. this is for the ones that complain about it not working on 3.1.3 or think they are releasing it to the general public. Lol.

I don't see what all of the fuss is all about. Apple gave you what you wanted with 4.0, what more could you want?

I'd have to agree with that. It does give you more control over what apps you can install rather than only the ones Apple deams worthy, but other than that your right.

I had some of the same issues, the wifi issue is a beeitch, you just have to try again and again, for some reason I kept trying and it worked and stayed connected after like the 15th try . I believe the email issue can be fixed by tapping "Tap here to view the entire message". And as far as the photos app goes, the button in the corner that has the box with an arrow jumping out of it has been disabled for the beta. I own an iPod Touch so I am going off of my best knowledge, I believe you can attach a photo from the SMS app, and you can set a wallpaper from the Settings app, you just can't do it all from one convenient place... but only for the beta.

For all you people complaining about this jailbreak only being available for the 3g and not the 3gs or the ipad and not for 3.1.3. The reason being is because they are using an old exploit so they dont reveal the new exploit to Apple. So when 4.0 finally does come out all of us ipad and 3gs users can enjoy a jailbroken device also. And they are not gonna waste their time with such a crappy release like 3.1.3

So people posting that 3.2 betas were released for the iPhone is just a bunch of BS? so that means I'm going to have to wait even longer to jailbreak this thing? Damn!
