  • iPhone OS 4.0 Jailbreak is Released

One week from the day Apple announced OS 4.0, the iPhone Dev Team releases a jailbreak. This jailbreak is for developers to get ahead start on updating their apps for 4.0.

Details from: redsn0w 0.9.5 BETA [iPhone Dev Team]

This is a beta release of redsn0w targeted at developers of jailbroken apps.

Please not that this beta is not meant for the average end-user. There are many things “broken” with jailbroken apps in the 4.0beta1 environment right now, and this beta redsn0w allows the developers behind those jailbroken apps to fix their software before the general public gets iphoneOS 4.0.

Because it's meant for JB app developers, this beta redsn0w does not perform hactivation. You'll need a properly-registered developer UDID with Apple to get past the activation screen. For similar reasons, there is no Windows version of this beta redsn0w (since apps are developed on MacOSX). Please don't pirate Apple software.

Anyone other than developers of jailbroken apps porting their software to 4.0beta1 should still be using our previously-released redsn0ws for 3.0 through 3.1.3
    This BETA release supports:
    • iPhone 3G only (for now)
    • Mac OSX only (for now)
    • the 4.0beta1 FW only (for now)

YOU SHOULD STAY CLEAR OF THIS BETA SOFTWARE IF YOU RELY ON A CARRIER UNLOCK. That's because the beta redsn0w works only if your device has already been upgraded to the stock 4.0beta IPSW from Apple, which contains a baseband update. If you installed that IPSW, you've already lost the carrier unlock until the next planned release of ultrasn0w and blacksn0w.

YOU SHOULD STAY CLEAR OF THIS BETA SOFTWARE IF YOU RELY ON A CARRIER UNLOCK!

    Enjoy!

    EDIT:

    Multitasking on your 3G

Once you are jailbroken, navigate to /System/Library/CoreService/SpringBoard.app/N82AP.plist

Open the plist and change the multitasking key to = True

if the multitasking key is not there, add it

I first thought it was when I was playing with the plist file to enable wallpaper and multitasking, but when updated essential stuff in cydia and installed openshh it does it. anyone with this problem?

Is there anyway to bypass the udid registration like we could with 3.0 beta?

Nobody is interested on JB for 4.0 and I dont know why they are so interested on it as Apple is not stupid when they reliase the final version I want to see this news. I need a JB for 3.1.3 and there is no talk about it because it is almost not possible because if it was so easy I am sure someone would do it. I am interested to see what happens 3.1.3 JB news

A jailbreak for 3.1.3 is totally possible but you guys need to understand the bigger picture here. First of all... 3.1.3 has been jailbroken all along for older devices such as the iPhone 3G and IPT 2G and the 3GS with the old bootrom. It's people with the newer devices with the new bootrom that can't jailbreak 3.1.3. If the Devs released a jailbreak for the new bootrom 3.1.3 like Apple has wanted then there would be a very small amount of people in the jailbreak community benefiting. iBoot exploits (untethered jailbreaks) are MUCH harder to find and develop then something like a tethered blackra1n. Because of this the Dev community did the smart thing and is holding this exploit for a couple months (no big deal).. so the ENTIRE jailbreak community can have an untethered 4.0 jailbreak on ALL devices. It's quite possible that if the Devs had released a 3.1.3 jailbreak that it would take a REALLY long time to find another one after 4.0 came out. Finally... it's proposed that since this same exploit works on the iPad that it will also work on the upcoming iPhone.

In conclusion... for the minority of people that bought their phone on 3.1.3 or were forced to upgrade.. or get a warranty phone.. or whatever the reason may be.. you are a TINY group of people in the overall scheme of things and to sacrifice not being able to jailbreak or use your phone at all for a couple months so that everyone can enjoy a jailbreak in the end is not too much to ask..

I wouldn't say the new boot room users are a minority....it's been like that since what October 2009? They have a tethered jailbreak for 3.1.3 new bootroom and that will be released when the ipad 3g comes out.

I was able to jailbreak 4.0b1 successfully. I ssh'd in and enabled multitasking. I'm having a problem though. When I press the home key, I end up with just a black screen with the carrier/signal/battery indicators at the top, and can't move between apps or do anything until I reboot my phone.

Edit: I was able to fix the black screen issue by enabling the homescreen option in the plist file.

Multitasking doesn't seem to be fully functional. Safari will not load pages in the background. Pandora also will not play in the background, though this may be due to the fact that it needs an update. Are the seven services that facilitate backgrounding apps even in the 3G firmware?

The new bootrom is old but the 3.1.3 firmware is relatively new . The minority of people are those that have upgraded or purchased their phone on 3.1.3. This firmware came out February 2nd so it's only been around 2 1/2 months.

For those JB app devs who experienced SMS or 3G data failures, the new 0.9.5b2 download at the bottom of this page should clear things up. You'll need to do a fresh restore to stock 4.0b1 before applying the new beta redsn0w update.

Why are people still whining about 3.1.3 jailbreak?

A new untethered jailbreak for new 3.1.3 devices will never, ever, ever, EVER be released.

      Realize it. Stop whining.

We're too close to the release of the new iPhone OS 4.0. Less than 2 months away.

Whatever your opinions are about revealing exploits immediately or waiting for large upcoming software updates, you bet your *** that Dev-Team and Geohot won't waste an untethered exploit (that works on all iDevices; all iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad) on something as useless as fw 3.1.3!

If you you want be in the jailbreak-game, you'll have to be patient and wait. Only 2 months away.

      :-)

Because they either updated, bought a new phone or had their phone replaced and want a JB

I think you are almost certainly wrong there.
