  • Multifl0w - The Future of iPhone Multitasking with Backgrounder

Status Updated: Multifl0w is available through ModMyI repo now.

We've all seen the Palm Pre and HTC ads that boast about the ability to multitask. Why Apple did not include this still blows my mind (yeah yeah, battery usage my ***. then make a better battery. We NEED to multitask). What better productivity tool is there than being able to multitask with your available apps?!

Thankfully for us Jailbroken users, this idea of multitasking has been possible for quite some time now with the use of an app called Backgrounder by Lance Fetters (ashikase), available in Cydia for free.

While this app has definitely been a heaven-sent gift for us multitaskers, there has definitely been a need to have more efficient access to currently running apps. At this time, Backgrounder provides a little badge beside the App icons to indicate which are currently running, which was a good start.

Very shortly Backgrounder's new best friend, Multifl0w will be introduced. Multifl0w, developed by @aaronash, is your newest, baddest, kick *** UI for backgrounder apps. With the ability to see which apps are open and swipe through them to quickly open them, just like the good ol Palm Pre commercials.

Backgrounder will be required alongside this app. You won't be able to run kirikae and multifl0w at the same timem but still a huge win for Jailbroken users, as usual.

Aaron tweeted today that we could see Multifl0w as soon as tonight or tomorrow morning on Cydia or Rock. The Developer has also mentioned that the app will be a Paid app costing somewhere in the $4-6 range. He had also mentioned that it should be available in both Cydia and Rock.

For now, here's a video and some screenshot. Let us know what you think.

When can we expect an update to address some of the issues that are being reported, like missing screenshot from some apps and the battery drain issue some are having? The success of this app rests with how fast these issues can be addressed before folks lose interest.

Why not have a thumbnail page display similar to that used in Overboard, and show all active applications on ONE page?
Good points! I think I'll hold off until the app closing is added - hopefully like closing pages in Safari.

Yeah...this app needs A LOT more work. The iPod and Mail apps don't have screenshots, and (in my experience) if you have a couple apps set to be automatically backgrounded, it's a crap shoot if multifl0w decides to have those apps even show up in the list, let alone a screenshot. Needs another stage of beta testing, it's ridiculous to be charging for this already.

I love the idea behind this, but the execution right now is terrible. Here's to hoping major bugfixes and updates are in the near future.

Double tap the home button. That'll bring up MultiFl0w. Then double tap the home button again. That'll close MultiFl0w and bring up the iPod controls.

Is anyone else having these battery issues?
Is anyone else missing a preview image for the mail app?

Besides the battery issues, I think it's a great idea. Definitely needs some updates already, such as, a way to close a running app, preview for the mail app, and maybe a more visually appealing look to it.
I barely noticed a difference with battery life.

Also, in case anyone was wondering, I was able to run up to 15 apps in the background, and noticed very little lag. 15 was the max, though. After that, apps started closing to free up memory.

Why not just stick with Kirikae? Some of us actually like the way this is set up.

i've been using it for a day now and it's been working great on my 3GS. always shows previews for any backgrounded app, always works as needed. and i am just utterly amazed at how well the phone can multitask. i expected to notice servere lag if i multitasked a bunch of apps but no, flips back and forth between the apps just as fast as if i wasn't multitasking!(was only multitasking about 4-5 things, some basic apps like weather, calc and a game or two) i have not noticed any battery issues except for one time yesterday. i drove home from work yesterday and i swore i saw the battery was at 68%. put it in my pocket and got out of the car, did a few things around the house no more than an hour later and looked and i was at 21%.

now i have not experienced anything like this before or after, and may have been some weird fluke.

as others have said, can't wait for updates to this app. (P.S. biggest update i want is a better battery from apple!! lol)

Be aware if you use IntelliDial, you will not be able to access the Multifl0w screen if you have IntelliDial's "Favorites Launch" enabled. They both use the same double click to access.

      Hey Guys!

I'm glad to be able to release something like this to the community. I'm working on it as much as possible - and hopefully I'll have some fixes out soon. I wanted to go ahead and release it because I know some people really wanted it - and it's in a much better form than it was several days ago. I plan on working on and supporting this for a while - so hopefully it'll be much cooler down the road.

Thanks for all your support/comments/criticism/bug reports!

Or maybe something like mQuickDO that you can just go to the area where you select place a finger over the the page you want and flick up or a (X) at the page to get rid of it? if that happens I am totally sold beyond sold =D Like drag the app outside the scrolling area and it will close how bout that?

I purchased the app and love the functionality. I'm also missing screenshots for mail, ipod, hippo remote. Shouldn't the app automatically produce a screenshot for coverflow for any app you background?

whenever i try this it just brings up ipod controls
      ?

Of you guys have configured it right, then the first double click on home would bring up either multifl0w or Kirikae, and the double click again will bring up iPod control. On lockscreen, double click will bring up iPod control if your setting is right.

If you want the first double click to bring up iPod control and not Kirikae, then use other methods to invoke Kirikae, (such as pressing and holding the power button)

damn he flipped through apps effortlessly! nice work! Idk if i'll get this because i've had bad experiences in the past with backgrounder making the phone slow..but i might try it once more.

A temporary fix I discovered to cue Multifl0w to take a screenshot is to manually quit those apps with SBSettings and then reopen them. Hope that helps!

I would stay away from my favorite app SBSetting because I had to restore 18 times from Apple after installing SBSettings and BigBoss does not believe me also sent them a picture of what stated bigboss sbsettingsd.plist couldn't find unable to launch.

SBSettings could be one of the best apps out there. Never heard of anyone having problems with it.

Here is some quick notes on 1.1 from FSM

Multifl0w 1.1 comes with a couple of bug fixes but it also brings a new icon on the SpringBoard: Multifl0wPrefs. The prefs pane will let you blacklist apps that you don’t want to multitask and also will let you choose how do you want to access multitasking. So far you could access it by double tapping the Home button. Now you can choose single tap, double tap or press and hold the home button , you can choose to access multitasking by pressing and holding the power button or choose no button. If you choose no button you will access multitasking with an external toggle or it will be off. I didn’t see any toggle for it in Cydia, so my guess is that for now, the multitasking will be off , if you choose no button.
