  • AT&T Announces MMS

    Better late than never, right?

Millions of Apple customers will presumably mark their calendars today. Indeed, a day Apple customers have long awaited is finally upon us.

On September 25th, AT&T will at long last flip the switch on MMS service for Apple's iPhone 3G and 3GS customers.

Apple says that MMS (which allows instant messages to include embedded multimedia) will be enabled through a software update beginning that day. It should be noted, though, that the original iPhone will not be capable of transmitting MMS.

The announcement came today on the company's website.

We know that iPhone users will embrace MMS. The unique capabilities and high usage of the iPhone’s multimedia capabilities required us to work on our network MMS architecture to carry the expected record volumes of MMS traffic and ensure an excellent experience from Day One. We appreciate your patience as we work toward that end.
It's a long awaited move that, according to Kent German at CNET, finally inducts the iPhone "into the cell phone family."

Apple customers have been extraordinarily patient in waiting for this development (there have even been lawsuits inspired by the lack of MMS on the iPhone). So for many of us - but especially the litigious ones - September 25th simply can't come soon enough.

Congratulations to Apple, the iPhone, and to all of us!

How many think AT&T's network will be crippled that day due to all the iPhone users trying out MMS?

Fastest 3G my a** too. AT&T can you move any slower?

It will be interesting to see if I even drop more calls when I have 3G enabled when the network is flooded with MMS.

okay, will this be the final reason I stop jailbreaking? NOT!
I've lived without it this long. No big deal.

My question is when will it actually be enabled? The majority of us have the carrier update file and have the mms enabled software wise so were not waiting on the update, just some overpaid slob to make a couple keystrokes.
