  • AT&T Announces MMS

    Better late than never, right?

Millions of Apple customers will presumably mark their calendars today. Indeed, a day Apple customers have long awaited is finally upon us.

On September 25th, AT&T will at long last flip the switch on MMS service for Apple's iPhone 3G and 3GS customers.

Apple says that MMS (which allows instant messages to include embedded multimedia) will be enabled through a software update beginning that day. It should be noted, though, that the original iPhone will not be capable of transmitting MMS.

The announcement came today on the company's website.

We know that iPhone users will embrace MMS. The unique capabilities and high usage of the iPhone’s multimedia capabilities required us to work on our network MMS architecture to carry the expected record volumes of MMS traffic and ensure an excellent experience from Day One. We appreciate your patience as we work toward that end.
It's a long awaited move that, according to Kent German at CNET, finally inducts the iPhone "into the cell phone family."

Apple customers have been extraordinarily patient in waiting for this development (there have even been lawsuits inspired by the lack of MMS on the iPhone). So for many of us - but especially the litigious ones - September 25th simply can't come soon enough.

Congratulations to Apple, the iPhone, and to all of us!

3G has nothing to do with Cell phone Service

Awesome. Now I can stare at my iPhone for 5 minutes while trying to send a picture cussing AT&T because they say that they don't guarantee I'll get a signal anywhere but outdoors, not in my car or in any structure. WTF is the point of having a phone if you can only use it in broad daylight?? I get two bars of EDGE 90% of the time, and they refuse to make a network that's worth a damn while everyone I know with every other service provider in my area gets full bars, no dropped calls, and highest speeds attainable on their smartphones. I'm leaving AT&T the very second the iPhone leaves, soley because here in the South if you don't live in a major city they don't cover the area worth a damn.

In its brief statement, AT&T offered few reasons why it's taken so long to get such a basic cell phone feature. It only said MMS "required us to work on our network MMS architecture to carry the expected record volumes of MMS traffic and ensure an excellent experience from Day One."

I don't just blame at&t for not allowing MMS, as much as I blame Apple for being so goddamn arrogant to think they could leave it out because they're all a bunch of pompus a-holes that think pics should be sent via email. Douchebags. BOOST MOBILE phones have MMS! ugh

Google (problems with 3G and dropped calls). One of my coworkers was even told by an AT&T employe to turn off 3G to prevent dropping calls.
