  • iPhone 3GS Jailbreak purplera1n Released! [Windows]

Geohot has released his iPhone 3GS jailbreak named purplerain. Avaialable for download here this has to be one of the easiest jailbreaks to use (if it works ).

    Instructions:

    1. Download purplera1n. This download is Windows only. Also it doesn't work on Windows 7. MMi user mutigers42 among others report that Windows 7 works.
I clicked make it rain, it said "putting in recovery mode" - my phone kind of froze, didn't turn off or anything and no response, until i closed the app and unplugged the USB cable and replugged it back in - then the apple logo came on and recovery mode

After i did that, i just ran the program again - and it worked perfectly
It IS beta so make sure you have all your data before trying to use this tool. A Mac version should be following something in the near future.

This tool is just for jailbreak and will NOT activate the phone or unlock it. Therefore, you should have an activated iPhone before following the guide.

Please backup the iPhone 3GS before following the procedure below.

    2. Run purplera1n.

    3. Click make it ra1n.

You should see a screen where purplera1n is connecting to your iphone.

Sadly that's as far as I get (I blame betanesssss).
Edit: you need to have CProgram Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\bin\iTunesMobileDevice.dll
I'm running windows off of D drive so thats why mine didn't work. Simple making that directory and copying the file to c drive has fixed my problems.

BUT those of you lucky enough to make it all the way the remainder of the steps are as follows:

purplera1n on PC will say 'done, wait for reboot'.

    4. After the iPhone boots, it will have a new app 'Freeze' with white icon.

    5. Open Freeze and tap 'Install Cydia'. It will now download and install the package and then clean the installation. Wait till it says 'Finished!' and then just exit to home screen. If you still don't have cydia, reboot the phone and use freeze again.

Your iPhone 3GS is now jailbroken with Cydia installed!

The credit for this wonderful tool goes to GeoHotz! Thanks to mepp for help with screenshots!

Actually, you can just uninstall it through Cydia and all is good.

No you don't. It just reboots it "safe mode". You then go into the packages in Cydia, remove it, and reboot. No big deal.

Worked like a charm! (Kinda) on my Vista Ultimate SP1 x86 Machine. A trick I had to do was once it ran the first time it got stuck in recovery mode and did nothing so I actually let that instance of PR running and reran the program while in recovery mode and it worked like a charm!

It's a welcome tool for us with programming experience. Maybe it's not the best for end-users / script kiddies.

Worked fine here. Had to click purplrra1n.exe a second time because it was stuck in restore mode. Installed Cydia with no issues as well.

      Windows Vista SP2

Does this restore your iphone, or does it keep all your contact, messages, music, etc. on the iphone?

      HOLY CRAP!

The 3GS runs emulators better than the systems themselves! I'm so ******* stoked about this. GEOHOT is the ****!

make sure you have "iTunesMobileDevice.dll" at path: "CProgram Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\bin"

next, put purplera1n.exe in a file with the ra1nyday file you got earlier this week.

      run purplera1n.exe

it should roll through everything. Mine did the USB cord to cd with music note thing but then jumped through to the purplera1n image.

if it gets stuck in recovery mode again, use quickpwn.

      hopefully this helps.

That being said, I got a few PM's saying you DONT need the ra1nyday file. Personally mine worked the second I put the ra1nyday file in the same folder as purplera1n.exe... so I'm thinking it needed it there. Also, make sure your phone is plugged into the BACK of the computer and NOT the front. purplera1n CAN NOT send commands threw the front USB plugs

WOW. This is the simplest jailbreak ever. It worked on the first in less than 30 seconds. If they can make it better so that it works for all others this will be the prefered jailbreak forever. Cydia works incredibly fast on the 3gs. GOOOOOOOOO GEOOOOOOOOHOTTTTTT.

After installing ultrasn0w everything seemed to be working fine (sms, internet once I entered in the wap.voicestream.com), but phone calls are the issue now. The timer on the calls doesn't move, so I can't receive calls yet; reinstalling ultrasn0w now. Will update soon.
