  • 3G4: N64 Emulator for iPhone 3GS [Preview]

3G4, is a Nintendo 64 emulator developed by NWorksDev, for the iPhone 3GS and iPod touch 3rd Gen. Yup, your gonna need some juice for this bad boy!

Just recently there was a video released that demos the project thus far. It appears to be legit and runs incredibly smooth. The controller layout looks great and saves screen real estate. However, there are no L, R, or Z buttons at the moment.

The developer claims to be 14 years old, and says that "something deemed impossible is being brought to us by a 14 year old developer". Unfortunately he has said the release will not be until April 2010.

3G4 could possibly become first native Nintendo 64 emulator for the iPhone 3GS and the iPod Touch 3G. ZodTTD has also been working on a Nintendo 64 Emulator, but unfortunately we have heard no news on in some time. By the looks of it though, ZodTTD will probably release something before this unlad anyways.

There are of course the usual problems with any project in development such as "duplicate button registers, delay of presses, and crashes when heavy gameplay occurs. "

Here is said video below for your viewing pleasure. I will try and get a review of this as soon as I can get my hands on it. Stay tuned.

Here is what the developer has released as a "Trailer"

This is in the works and was demonstrated by ZodTTD on the nes4iPhone release, however I see the ability to use a PS3 controller or any bluetooth controller for that matter, to work with any of our emulators via the BTStack project.

Hopefully he'll release a full-speed version for older models. Unlikely, but probably possible.

      Looks fake.
Mario started to move before he moved his thumb.
Most likely a video playback and he simulate the button pushing almost at the right time, I hope I am wrong because I would love to play goldeneye again.

I looked really close and i agree with you...some of the movement seems to be slightly off...but that could just be delay because its not perfect yet.

I love this stuff! I would gladly shell out of ZodTTD's emulators (or anyone else's for that matter) but the cross pad frustrates the heck out of me.

Its not the theme - its the execution. I really think emulator dev's should take notes from successful dev's like gameloft when it comes to control execution.

It has been incredibly intuitive playing gameloft's games despite the fact that control setups are almost identical to ZodTTD's. The difference? Gameloft has implimented a sort of "smart virtual joystick" that will re-define its location and continue to work outside of its default parameters. If I slide my thumb too far away from the pictured D-pad with an emulator I lose control of my character.

      Emulator dev's:

you guys need to update the d-pad's functionality so that your emulators are actually playable. I would love to play something other than classic RPG's, where absolutely no skill is required what-so-ever.

great job with the emulators... but the controls make me want to throw my iPhone 3GS against the wall. I really want to support your work by purchasing your emulators... but there is no point if they are rendered unplayable by such a small detail.

why would anyone want to play NES games on their iPhone is beyond me, if you want to play NES games then buy an NES? Is it just me that thinks this way? Still, looks cool tho, and if this lad is really 14 Y.O then he has a very bright future ahead of him, clever lad.

I guess some ppl can sit and play games like this on their phone for hours, I don't see how..but they do. I understand playing something like this to kill some time while waiting for something or if you get bored in class, but to play for long periods of time..that's crazy! My head would start to throb and my eyes would explode from staring at the small screen! Some ppl can pull it off though I guess.

This made me so happy just cause zodtt has competition now. I remember when the emulators were free, then rock app came around and you have to download that also to use the emulators (not trying to talk down about rock app but why do I need that to play a game?) either way this kids work looks promising and if it's free I'll be more then glad to donate
