  • YourTube - Download YouTube Videos FROM YouTube.app

    UPDATE: It's out.

Remember MxTube? MxTube is officially extinct. Another victim of survival the fittest. YourTube will be available via CydiaStore sometime in the Very Near Future IS NOW AVAILABLE in the Cydia Store, and my goodness is it brilliant. We got ahold of an early tester version, and it's everything a YouTube downloader should be.

For starters, it's A PART OF YouTube.app. Well, technically it's an extension using MobileSubstrate (saurik's magic doorway to the iPhone for devs), built by pumpkin - point being, it integrates seamlessly with YouTube.app. And it works beautifully...

Say, for instance, I just love SNL's Mother Lover bit (I do). And I'd like to have it on my phone, or desktop, regardless of whether I'm connected to the net. What do I do? With YourTube installed, I just open YouTube.app, and find the video like I would normally. Click on the little blue arrow next to the video (which is always there), and... what's this? A new button in the top right - download. Press that, and (if there's multiple qualities up) I'm asked if I'd like to download the High Quality or Low Quality version of the app. Well thanks, YourTube, I'll take the High Quality version.

The same cute familiar animation you'd see in iTunes.app when you choose a song appears, the video jumps down to my Downloads tab, and if I tap that tab... there it is. Coming down quite nicely. I can even swipe to cancel or delete.

The quality is even better than you'd expect (much better than on 3G, which always shoots me the Low Quality version - unless I'm running 3G Unrestrictor), and all downloads are viewed/managed from within YouTube.app itself from the Downloads tab.

The downloaded movies are in an .mp4 format, so any iPhone file browser should be able to play them as well as YouTube.app itself. Of course, if you're the SSH type who'd prefer to grab them yourself and toss 'em to your desktop, check out /var/mobile/Media/Downloads/YourTube/ to see a list of your files. The file names aren't too pretty, heh, but you can grab any of your downloads from there as well.

There's no official word on price yet, but the rumblings on the street suggest a $2 tag. EDIT: Yup, $2 is official. And I'd pay more. Snap this one up, only available on the Cydia Store, sometime in the next 24 hours most likely.

It's just simple, you have a choice so just choose which one suits you.

      MxTube = Free
YourTube = integrated into the YouTube app and no daemon running at the back

No one is pointing a gun at your head to use YourTube.

P/S - The vids are stored at var/mobile/media/downloads/yourtube right? When we delete a downloaded vid, the vids will not be deleted in the folder.

i would have kept mxtube, but if its really killing my battery/using processor all the time (which was stated and then confirmed earlier on in this thread) even when its not open, then i'm uninstalling it either way, and will consider yourtube in the future.

mxtube may not be dead, but any app thats killing battery life and using my valuable processor cycles even when its closed is dead to me. :P

maybe someone could make an sbsettings toggle for MxTube's daemon...

but until or unless that happens: RIP mxTube

Youtube tells you how to get it for free (irony?)! Anyhow, I still paid for it, 1.50 is nothing

For all of you using mxtube - you wouldn't be if it wasn't for pumpkin, isn't that worth a couple of bucks to you?
Exactly what was I going to say...I noticed pumpkin is a member of the dev team, and even I may rarely use this app, I felt it was a nice way to "donate" and actually get something useful in return.

I actually did try it out and it works flawless so far! Nice job! I hope we see more of your work in the future...

I wish someone could develop a voice to text app so I could speak my text messages while driving. I know it sounds strange (why not just call the person?), but man I hate texting while driving. I'm sure the others driving near me hate it too! Sorry just typing while thinking....

I like the layout better and it remembers my last search. Thumbs Up!

With that said, there are some videos that you can find on MXTube that you can not find on You(r)Tube. One example would be Peter Gabriel - Big Time (the actual music video). Genesis - Land Of Confusion also.

While writing this, though, I tried searching for them on both again and couldn't find either video on either app. I can find it on youtube.com. Still, I have both of those downloaded on MXTube and can find neither using You(r)Tube. Hmmm.

I'm waiting for the texting app that opens the camera behind your text screen. That way you can watch the road and your spelling.

I was kidding, but it shouldn't surprise me. The most I do with my phone (*While driving) is look at the screen to see who is calling. That does scare me a bit that someone could be driving using their iPhone as a viewfinder while texting.....

Great app, I its worth the 2 bucks, It would be nice, like said to have them in the ipod videos. I did find a trick to add them into the ipod video, But you need to use your pc. Hope they come out with a update where it will just download to your ipod.

why cant someone edit the camera app like this on 3g's and intergrate cycorder or something in it so we dont need 2 apps and it'd save the video with the rest of our pictures...
