  • What Role Will 3D Display Have in Future iDevices?

One of Hollywood's newest and biggest love affairs centers on the movie industry's appetite for all things 3D. At no time in recent memory have film studios been so aggressive in their efforts to ramp up plans to produce, film, and distribute movies for 3D screens. Accordingly, in the age of mobile digital content consumption, audiences are growing eager to enjoy the same thrills of big screen entertainment on the small screens that trail their every step.

Herein lies the birth of a much-talked-about possibility this week, one that suggests Apple is considering using 3D technology in future iDevices, most likely the iPad 3. "The fact that the iPad 3 is 3D is a dead cert,” one Hollywood insider tells RCR Wireless, which noted the close relationship the source has to Hollywood-based major production studios.

She went on to say that the big film studios were currently running around like blue arsed flies trying to gear up to release plenty of 3D content in time for Apple’s next launch.
Of course, as with similar speculation about Apple possibly embracing over-the-air iOS updates in the future, the prospect of a 3D-capable tablet screen isn't altogether groundbreaking either. The new PlayBook, after all, supports 3D video, even though a major drawback is the fact that it must be connected to a 3D enabled TV screen via HDMI to function. Oh yeah, and it requires those fashion-challenged 3D glasses.

Although the web is populated daily with talk of what Apple might do in subsequent product refreshes, the concept of Cupertino infusing future iPads with glasses-less 3D screens isn't too terribly difficult to fathom. After all, the iPad has become one of the world's most popular contemporary platforms for consuming digital media - and, in particular, movies.

Should the iPad 3, for example, turn up in 2012 with corresponding 3D viewing technologies, the feature could prove a major selling point to no shortage of on-the-fence buyers and current iPad owners considering the upgrade.

I'm not a big fan if the 3d feature. No selling point for me.

Hopefully none. Or at least give us the option to turn that bullsh!t off. 3D TVs are failing by the dozen, vastly underselling even conservative expectations. It is a gimmick. It is a CHEAP way for Hollywood to cash in even bigger on their movies, 90% of which are completely forgettable garbage. $30 wasn't enough for a Bluray. Oh no. So, make it a 3D Bluray and charge $40!

I'm anxiously waiting for the day for it to go away like Limp Bizkit and portable CD players.

Avatar was awesome in 3D. Everything else is a waste of time.

      I don't see much benefit for 3d on a 3.5 inch screen

Well it does look pretty cool on the 3DS. Not sure how well that would translate to a iPhone or iPad though.

I was actually shocked 3D was being made a big deal in 21st century. LED tech made more sense for thinner phones and flat screens, but a premium for 3D and limited content? No

Hopefully none. 3D is a gimmick and wish it the best of luck fading away.

+1, hit the nail on the head there pal.
It's a lazy excuse to make crappy films and then market them as "amazing 3D experiences"

This will end up like the guy on the Best Buy commercial that buys the 3D TV, then sees the ad on the side of a truck for 4D. Just a fad and no real usage on a handheld device. Maybe this could be added to future iPads but not for iPhone/iPods, IMO.

If you have to wear glasses and it gives you a headache after awhile like current 3-D movies then I hope it doesn't have any role in the phone biz.

Hopefully none! 3D is the biggest waste of time. It's just a stupid gimmick that I want nothing to do with! I want 3D to burn in hell for all eternity.

If 3D was to properly take off (as in: it will aways be a standard), I recon the way forward is 3D "without glasses" like the 3DS, the LG Optimus 3D and that split screen thing in the new Range Rovers.

But correct me if I'm wrong but: I was under the impression that all those technologies only work in one orientation (landscape OR portrait) only, permanently.

If I'm right I think we've still got a looooong way to go yet.

I think it would be kinda cool to have the idevice line have the nintendo 3DS type 3D screen. Imagine the kickass springboard themes that would happen. But I also think you should have an option to turn it off.

Nintendo comes out with all the neat gadgets. DS, 3DS, Wii. All apple does is make neat devices that they slowly improve on but is still basically the same.

Could be the most far-off idea for the iPhone I have even remotely thought about.

Let's think about the "groundbreaking" features in the i4: Good display, front camera, antenna, dual mic, and new design.

Now 3D... Apple won't pioneer this. There is no competition besides 3DS to compare consumer reactions, and if Apple even cares to keep the 'phone' in the iPhone, ask yourself this: would u pay $200 to get a phone with 3D?

This is honestly very far off, even more so than the iPhone getting a kickstand. 3D would be a step backwards for Apple; however, it is obviously a huge leap in the desperation for rumors on this site.
