  • Macbook Pro 13" Disassembled, Clunky SD Slot revealed.

Just a couple short days after the Macbook Pro 13" was announced ifixit has gotten there hands on one and made an excellent disassembly guide. One of the first things discovered (before the mbp was even pulled apart) was that the SD card slot is a bit underwhelming and not spot on with Apple's design principals. Instead of having an SD slot where an inserted card is flush with the body, the card sticks out approx. half an inch -- very un-apple-esque. edit: That being said the whole thing is still pretty sexy

Other things to note about the 13" Macbook Pro
    • No battery access door. This is in line with Apple's recent direction of long lasting internal batteries. As expected the battery is huge taking up a large portion of the Macbook.
    • Apple controversially removed FireWire from their most recent laptop updates. FireWire is back with the 13" Macbook Pro!
    • Computer lock has switched sides.
    • It is pretty simple to replace the hard drive and battery yourself if need be.
Some pictures from the ifixit guide below!

      1st!

I picked up a Unibody in Oct 08... i wonder how hard it will be to switch to the Backlit keyboard.

I think its easier to remove the card if its sticking out a little. My external card reader is the same way. When its flush its hard to push it in to make it pop out unless you have long finger nails.

I co-sign this. With most of the card readers they stick out like that so they can be removed with your fingers. If they had made it flush they wouldve also had to make a switch that would eject the card out which couldve eventually failed and not to mention take up more space on the side of a machine that has recently become more crowded.

True, but no good if you accidentally hit it! No magnet to save you there and I'm very accident-prone LOL

I don't really see this as a bid deal as the SD card should not be in the slot for more than a few mins while transferring files.

I don't think you want a SD card to be flush any more than you'd have a USB drive flush. Design looks great to me - they've left it sticking out more than many card readers do so it's easier to remove.

I prefer the SD card to stick out myself...... Easy to get at... really convent idea! I don't think its no more than having a wireless USB mouse.... that always sticks out as well.....

Personally I don't even really care for the SD card stuff. Just as fast to do over USB imo... unless you are doing tons of files. Nice to not have a cable I guess. Either way I probably wouldn't really ever use it.

And by the way, the way they have spring loaded slots these days it is no harder to remove those than the ones that are sticking out.

I would use it for a 32 gb sd card to hold music pics and documents or copies on them but then again you can usb a portable hd to do the same thing. I thinks is a golden idea anyway.

What about other people? Are they NOT reading your post?

Any idea where or how we can buy the keyboard?
