  • Woz and the Modbook Pro - 15.4" Mac Tablet by Axiotron

Axiotron announced today their new tablet model - the Modbook Pro, which works with pen AND touch. At 15.4", its "constructed from a unibody Apple Macbook Pro base system," and looks sexy in black.

Specs include up to a 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, a 15.4" WXGA display, NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT graphics card, and the thing is actually thinner than the MacBook Pro base system - at only 0.93".

    (click for larger photos)

They include Axiotron Quickscript handwriting recognition for writing and notetaking, and a new Synergy Touch technology they've developed which adds full touch support simultaneous to pen usage. Its pre-loaded with OS X of course, but there's also even an option to have a pre-installed partition with Windows Vista Business Edition.

Steve Wozniak, Apple co-founder and anti-closed-iPhone spokesman happens to be on Axiotron's board of advisors, and was here at Macworld today doing a presentation on the Modbook Pro.

At a whopping $4,999, this tablet is not for the light of wallet (you can actually send them your own MacBook Pro, and they will make a Modbook Pro out of it for $3049). The device comes with a 1 year limited hardware warranty.

For $5000 I can get a super fast gaming machine.

Anything with "Apple" in it are over priced! You're paying for the brand.

NO WAY will I ever pay $5000 for that thing! lol, better invest the money in a Macbook Pro. And with the recession, good luck with marketing that thing.

WOW!!! ... What exactly is the benefit of the tablet over a regular laptop? Not that i'm gonna shell out 5000 dollars anytime soon, but should one happen to fall off of a truck somewhere.lol

Why are people saying stuff about "build yourself a gaming PC"... this is NOT meant to be a gaming device and is NOT a PC!! It's a converted Macbook Pro with touch screen. You're buying the macbook pro for $2799 and paying another $2,200 for labor and hardware conversion.

Omg omg it's not made by apple!!!! Honestly? Do you really think that matters. I'm sure that it's good quality. And obviously apple has not problem with it and it is a fine product it if Wozniak is giving the keynote.

5 grand? hahahahahahahahahaha they've lost their damn minds.

you know what they say about a fool and his money... if someone really wanted a touch screen mac that bad, they should throw osx86 on one of the new dells and save a huge chunk of change. (providing there are hacked/3rd party OS drivers for it)

I'd really like to know the specs on the touch screen as well. I'd be willing to bet that it would be pretty useless 9 times out of 10 depending on how sensitive it is. (I really can't imagine it working like a tablet, or atleast not very well)

just save for the wacom cintiq

What people mean to say is this... "If you spend 5k on this thing you are an idiot... you can spend way less and have way more fun with a gaming PC. Anyone who buys this thing go it more for bragging rights than usefulness anyway, especially seeing as how there are no real official tablet/touch screen apps for OSX anyway...

I would love to buy one but for the price? - the price is the dealbreaker.
Hopefully Apple will bring out its own so we don't have to pay double (for ModBook) or triple (for ModBook Pro)

I don't know. This seems like a really good idea to me. So is this basically saying that you can turn in your macbook pro and they will give you one of these for a smaller price? Seems legit.
