  • New Samsung 10.1" Display Has More Pixels Than 27" iMac



    You read the headline right. Wipe the coffee off you just spit all over your monitor, and continue reading.

    The new LCD technology, developed by Samsung's subsidiary Nouvoyance, packs a 2560-by-1600 pixel resolution into a 10.1" display. This doubles the count of full 1080p displays and achieves a pixel density of 300 dpi. Any display capable of packing a 300 dpi pixel count qualifies as a "Retina" display.

    For those unfamiliar with the term "Retina" display, it is Apples term for a display that produces a pixel density so high the human retina can't discern between pixels from any viewing distance. This allows curves to appear smooth and eliminates jagged, pixelated edges. The iPhone 4 was the first mobile device to include this technology, and it has been widely rumored the next iPad will include the technology as well. Samsung, Apple's ever clever frenemy, will now likely provide Apple with the necessary retina displays for the next iPad.

    The Samsung display will be demoed at this years SID Display Week and likely be in production by the end of the year. In addition to the amazing resolution, the device will use 40% less power than traditional LCD's in power saving mode, as well as sport an improved color gamut.

    All of this sounds like gravy, and amazing, but even with a 40% reduction in power, it's going to take one hell of CPU and GPU to power a display pushing this many pixels. Imagine this kind of pixel density on a 27" iMac. I'd hate to do the math on what that resolution is.

      well it should certainly force apple to include the retina screen in their next iPad. youd atleast think so.

      Not sure how much "one-upping" there will be if Samsung is the one to provide such displays for future iPad models.

      Its too bad the iPad 2 did not have the upgraded screen, it can obviously be done at this point. Its really the only reason i did not ditch my first gen ipad for the iPad 2.

      Yeah and produce billions so there's never a shortage again. Jesus. Why is it so hard for a billion dollar company to think hey let's make a million and then sell more later.

      Yeah that's the huge problem; Swanson is completely right. We have the ability to make GPU that can support high resolution like that in small devices but it's extremely expensive and difficult to mass produce, not to mention eats up the battery.

      Oh and let me do the math on the display: 27" iMac with a 16:9 ratio gives us 23.54" by 13.24". The formula for pixels is simply: inches*DPI = pixels. So multiply each side by 300 DPI and we get a resolution of: 7060x3971.

      Doing the same math on a 10.1" screen we see that the actual resolution for 300 DPI is 2569x1605. So we're actually getting gipped 27245 pixels (2569*1605-2560*1600 : calculated pixels - actual pixels). But I really don't think anyone is that anal about it.

      Nice, Samsungs products are the ones to watch. If the iPhone 5 isn't on par with Galaxy S II then I'm jumping ship :P

      It could be that the actual pixels for the 10.1" screen is 2569x1605, but 2560x1600 is a more rounded number and they advertised that instead. Then we'd be getting an extra 27,245 pixels.

      This screen is for the Galaxy Tablet, not the phone. Not sure I'd want a 10.1" phone, lol.
