  • Apple Confirms iPhone 4G is Legit And They Want It Back!

We'll folks, It looks like all of this buzz over the lost and found iPhone 4G prototype is indeed legit. So legit, that Apple has written a letter to Gizmodo demanding the "Stolen" iPhone back.

After countless efforts to get in touch with Apple, Mr. Lam has finally got the claim he was looking for, and has given Apple the information they need to get in touch with the fellow currently in clutching this "iPhone 4G" in their hands.

While this is very exciting news, one can still speculate what kind of return can be had from such an announcement. At this point in time, I'll take it as legit. But I'll also keep an open mind that this could all be a publicity stunt. We'll see what happens, maybe Gizomodo will video tape an Apple rep coming in to get the iPhone, because quite frankly, I don't know how else one could prove that Apple has claimed the "iPhone"

The letter from Apple was as follows:

    "Dear Mr. Lam,

It has come to our attention that GIZMODO is currently in possession of a device that belongs to Apple. This letter constitutes a formal request that you return the device to Apple. Please let me know where to pick up the unit.

    Sincerly,
    Bruce Sewell
Senior Vice President & General Counsel"
Here was the reply that Brian wrote back:

    Bruce, thanks.
Here's Jason Chen, who has the iPhone. And here's his address. You two should coordinate a time.
    [Blah Blah Blah Address]
Happy to have you pick this thing up. Was burning a hole in our pockets. Just so you know, we didn't know this was stolen [as they might have claimed. meaning, real and truly from Apple. It was found, and to be of unproven origin] when we bought it. Now that we definitely know it's not some knockoff, and it really is Apple's, I'm happy to see it returned to its rightful owner.
P.S. I hope you take it easy on the kid who lost it. I don't think he loves anything more than Apple.
And since this was the only missing piece of the puzzle, we have now both extinguished any doubts of its origin but also, we get to give the phone back. *warm, fuzzy, huggy feelings of legal compliance*
California law states, "If it is lost, the owner has three years to reclaim or title passes to the owner of the premises where the property was found. The person who found it had the duty to report it."

This is a legit prototype looks way too good quality in the videos to be a chinese knock off. At least we get everything we wanted, and with 4.0 OS iPhone is gonna rock!!

I like the new design, I don't know why people don't like it. It fits much better with the rest of the apple products. The 3G and 3GS looked cheap.

I'm sure that some Apple employees keep a close eye on these forums to see what the jailbreak community is up to and if they see that people are suggesting a video recorded meeting when Apple reclaim this device then surely the Apple employee or executive who is collecting this device will set a very private location and check for any video recording before actually collecting the device, I know I would.
Personally I would have sold it to one of the jailbreak dev's to get a head start on jailbreaking etc.

Could this have even been put out into the wild by Apple themselves purposely to derail everyone?

      i think it looks legit
i dig the new style but since this us a prototype I'm sure it doesn't look exactly as the finished phone will, but can't be off by much

after seeing the guts I bought in, thats just to hard to fake

but that letter from apple sounded janky and unprofessional

but still the best news is the features of 4.0

now when I jailbreak there will be hardly any apps to worry about, no need for proswitcher winterboard catagories... plus camera now has a flash...

just can't wait to start modding the firmware so it can fly

I saw this on the morning news today, and it felt so cool knowing more about a subject then the TV broadcaster
P.S.: if the new iPhone is nothing like this, i think Gizmodo got some 'splainin to do

Tilt your screen back and look at the apple. You can clearly see some left over pixels, as if someone threw it into microsoft word and used the transparent color on it. I don't know if it's me, but wouldn't apple have a more... idk... legit looking letterhead?
Don't get me wrong, I think it is the iPhone 4g, but I don't think this is a real letter.

Edit: Sorry didnt know it was gonna be that big o_o

jacobthejokester, After looking at the letter closely the whole text in the letter looks to be just as pixelated as the letterhead and this regularly happens when scanning documents at a low resolution. I suppose one way to get an answer to it's authenticity would be for someone who has also seen a letter from Apple to see if it's the same letterhead.

What the heck do you people want? A news confrence held by Mr. Jobs saying it is legit? Get real people. Get over it, this IS REAL! You guys are over thinking this way too much. This would be the most elaborate and best con ever if this is proven Not real.

      1. That letter sounds like something a 12 year old would write.
      2. If they paid 5 grand for the iphone, they're just going to willingly give it back to apple?
      3. If this is true, the kid just ratted out his friend in the drop of hat.

      I don't believe it.

They didn't pay $10,000 for the "iPhone". They paid that money to have the pat on the back that they were the ones who disassembled & confirmed the rumor. It generates a hell of a lot of traffic to their website as well as positive credit.

Although I don't exactly agree with the way they are playing the card, I think given the small things we hate about Steve Jobs decisions it all breaks even in the end. No Flash? That's the least of your problems now Steve.

      1. Short and to the point.
      2. If you buy stolen property you can be thrown in jail. I would rather just hand it over, assuming Apple won't pursue this further legally, than get tossed in the slammer.
      3. Not sure what you are referring to here...

I wouldn't be surprised if Steve comes for the iPhone while its all getting taped and he turns to the camera saying this was your first insight on the iPhone 4g. Or saying cause of this there will be no showing of the 4g and you must wait till its release
