  • iPhone 4.0 Gets Multitasking, Bluetooth Keyboards, 5x Digital Zoom... and More!

This morning, Steve presided over a dev preview of iPhone OS 4. And he didn't disappoint.

The new iPhone OS, which will serve up more than 1,500 new APIs, comes packed with a plethora of awesome, long-awaited features: a social gaming network, advanced eBook reading features, the ability to create playlists, 5x digital zoom, tap to focus on video, geotagging, homescreen wallpaper changes, bluetooth keyboards, spell checker, and more.

After the hype and a little stroll down iPhone/iPod/iPad memory lane, Steve Jobs finally spoke the words we've been waiting to hear. The iPhone will support multitasking. "Now we weren't the first to this party," said Jobs, "but we're gonna be the best. Just like cut and paste."

So what took so long you ask? According to Jobs, the team at Apple has been toiling for many month on implementing multitaksing in a way that won't obliterate the iPhone's battery. And, based on the demonstration today, it appears that Apple succeeded in giving customers what they want without exacerbating another longstanding problem in the form of a weak battery.

So here are the seven services for multitasking: background audio, voice over IP, background location, push notifications, local notifications, task completion, fast app switching. For the demonstration presented, it was awesome to witness how the OS 4, for example, makes it possible for you to obtain directions from a GPS app while still rocking out to the music from the iPod app.

It's evident from the details provided thus far that Apple has clearly endeavored to give customers many of the features they've demanded at long last. And it also appears they've done so in a very thoughtful, efficient manner that not only satisfies the iPhone user base, but also significantly advances the power and potential of the device itself.

Disappointing. Everything I thought it would be.

The only reason to upgrade really is the hardware, but I doubt that'll be anything to get excited about either. 1gz processor, 5 m pixel camera, MAYBE a new body. Maybe.

Oh well, it's been fun iPhone, time to move on to the HTC EVO.

I'm sure I'll still linger here though. Gf will most likely want the new iPhone (Apple fangirl). Plus, it's always good to keep up with what the competition is doing. And for all that Apple hasn't done, it sure has created competition, for which we are able to get phones like the HTC EVO.

I hope someone tests this on an iPad and leaks it if it's safe. I don't want to wait till fall to get it on here. Hopefully next iPhone comes to verizon. I'll snatch that bad boy up.

      Question.

Do beta firmwares need to be activated with ATT too so people with hacktivation are out of luck??

As much as I want to try out the new 4.0 firmware I can't risk it, I always sell my old phone when the new one comes out every year, which means having it jailbroken and unlocked to get the most money out of it

This is a correct assumption. Unless something gets modded to hacktivate the firmware, you must activate via iTunes.

Ok, this might sound like a dumb question, or maybe one that can't be answered right now. Does anyone know if Apple has finally allowed us to customize SMS and mail alert tones?

I doubt this, they would have probably mentioned it in the presentation.

I was thinking that, but then thought that since there were much bigger features to discuss, that they opted not to announce it.

Looks like they have everything I want for my jailbroken phone except for maybe an sbsettings type deal. Several clicks to get to 3G on/off is just annoying.

The picture says in app sms, but they never said anything about it. I don't know what it would mean though other than being able to reply from the pop up, like with the cydia apps, so we can only hope for now.
