  • iPhone 4.0 Gets Multitasking, Bluetooth Keyboards, 5x Digital Zoom... and More!

This morning, Steve presided over a dev preview of iPhone OS 4. And he didn't disappoint.

The new iPhone OS, which will serve up more than 1,500 new APIs, comes packed with a plethora of awesome, long-awaited features: a social gaming network, advanced eBook reading features, the ability to create playlists, 5x digital zoom, tap to focus on video, geotagging, homescreen wallpaper changes, bluetooth keyboards, spell checker, and more.

After the hype and a little stroll down iPhone/iPod/iPad memory lane, Steve Jobs finally spoke the words we've been waiting to hear. The iPhone will support multitasking. "Now we weren't the first to this party," said Jobs, "but we're gonna be the best. Just like cut and paste."

So what took so long you ask? According to Jobs, the team at Apple has been toiling for many month on implementing multitaksing in a way that won't obliterate the iPhone's battery. And, based on the demonstration today, it appears that Apple succeeded in giving customers what they want without exacerbating another longstanding problem in the form of a weak battery.

So here are the seven services for multitasking: background audio, voice over IP, background location, push notifications, local notifications, task completion, fast app switching. For the demonstration presented, it was awesome to witness how the OS 4, for example, makes it possible for you to obtain directions from a GPS app while still rocking out to the music from the iPod app.

It's evident from the details provided thus far that Apple has clearly endeavored to give customers many of the features they've demanded at long last. And it also appears they've done so in a very thoughtful, efficient manner that not only satisfies the iPhone user base, but also significantly advances the power and potential of the device itself.

There are some pretty awesome features from 4.0 and I'm pretty excited to see what can and will be done with it, but there is still a thought in the back of my mind that Apple is at least two years too late to this party. I welcome the changes, but this is way late. I hope we get surprised and they allow lots of things they didn't talk about or are going to add them later. Like in-app SMS reply, custom mail and text alerts, better brightness and other controls ala SBSettings and things like that. I'm excited but skeptical at the same time.

Oh, and fantastic new hardware released later to go with the new firmware to waste money on and a sweet jailbreak!

That was my understanding, it's there but they didn't say anything. Thanks Jasper!

The only other thing I could think of it meaning is giving apps access to SMS capabilities. (eg making it an api in the SDK)

Still love my 2G. Have no problems with it. I feel shafted that I won't be able to run 4.0 at all.

i find it funny how people complain about a boring UI. I've seen the same flavor of Android for years, i've seen the same flavor of WM for years, and i've also seen the same flavor of BB for years. Jailbreak community with themes have corrupted ppls minds. I do like jailbreak don't get me wrong but now you can't use a phone without themes and believe the UI is old and boring.

      lol my swear filter :P

you gotta understand that multitasking will be on by default and will background all apps. if this is enabled on the iphone and iphone 3g, the phone would crash constantly. But yes they could background a small handful of apps that's what SMS, EMAIL, PHONE, and SAFARI are for lol.

      I have a question.
At the moment double clicking goes either to your phone contacts if music is not playing or if music is playing brings up a pop up dialog.
How are we supposed to bring these features now that double clicking is reserved for multitasking?
I'm using double clicking, especially for music all the time so I'll be disappointed to see it go away.

Smart move by Apple. I think the only thing left is really some sort of themes category. Perhaps themes that can be purchased on the App store. I think Apple can make a much greater argument that all jailbreaking is used for is piracy (let's face it, that is what they are publicly saying it is used for) if they simply give us everything we want from jailbreaking in the first place.

As much as it sucks that the original iPhone won't get this update, we knew it had to start somewhere. Frankly I feel Apple has been the most generous of all mobile phone producers with updates to their "older" handsets. I don't see any other company updating software on phones they produced three years ago.
