  • Apple to Limit iPhone 4.0 Multitasking?

Apple will be previewing iPhone OS 4.0 to reporters and industry analysts in a special presentation tomorrow that Apple called "a sneak peek into the future of iPhone OS software." Most observers are fairly confident that the update will bring multitasking to the iPhone and iPad, a feature that many users have been waiting a long time for. However, given the hardware limitations of the iPhone - especially older models - some pundits are guessing that Apple will restrict multitasking to certain applications only.

According to industry professionals and alleged leaks from inside Apple, multitasking in unavailable for most apps because of the load it would put of the iPhone and because of security concerns. remember that the iPhone OS is built on the same Mach microkernel that lies at the heart of the desktop Mac OS X, so it already supports fully-preemptive multitasking. Apple limits multitasking capabilities to its own apps like the phone, Messages, Mail, iPod, Voice Memos or ones that it directly controls such as Nike+. The limitation is always explained by the need to manage scarce resources and prevent the installation malware on the iPhone.

Thus, Apple is unlikely to allow full-bore multitasking in iPhone 4.0. Aaron Vronko, the CEO of iPhone service shop Rapid Repair, told Computerworld that he thinks that Apple will decide which apps will be permitted to run in the background, a scheme he calls "intelligent multitasking." Giving Apple control over the apps that will be able to multitask makes sense, according to Vronko, "because it lets Apple control the user experience and performance," he said, in a reference to power and memory management. The iPad, like the iPhone 3GS and third generation iPod touch, is limited by its 256MB of RAM, and older iPhone OS devices have only 128MB.

Though most observers, including analysts like Ezra Gottheil with Technology Business Research (who also gave his opinion to Computerworld), believe that the upcoming fourth-generation iPhone will have some version of the new A4 processor, both he and Vronko claim that multitasking will still overload the device, and that Apple will hobble the system to keep users from swamping the CPU and RAM. In a world where devices like a Blackberry Bold or a Palm Pre can multitask with less available resources, the case is far from strong... but it sounds like one that Apple will make anyway.

This is just like I told before in another article here on modmyi. They are going to limit the multitasking per device.
Its soooo strange that Apple Cant multitask the way it should.. It just CAn but they woulnd do it. Why not just put some extra Ram in the Device and let minimal you can choose to set 5 APPS to be Backgrounded and then you can quit one and put another in his place..
I dont think it not something they Cant do..its just they want to control the system overal..its kinda sad to see that.
And mostly they have to disabled a lot of Languages and other stuff that really dont need to be running in the kernal or background..they take a lot of memory and process...

1: Delete or let users select its language when setting up the phone and the rest of language will be deleted automaticly
2:Prevent or Stop putting services that dont be needed that takes memory and processor
3:Put more ram in the device. Ram is not so Expensive any more. the Flash memory is more Expensive than normal Memory..so why not make it 512Ram
4: Let us choose minimal 5 Apps that we want to put in background .. we can switch between to quit and put other instead of the one
      5: JUST DO IT APPLE

I dont understand why everyone get hype about all this apple talk whatever they come out with it will be restricted. They only allow you to have what they feel you need that's why video recording was so groundbreaking (to them). When they come out with new (old) tech for the iphone people go crazy and spend hundreds of dollars for something people have been doing for years. I for one don't need a ipad don't want a ipad its a oversized ipod but everybody will soak it up

Thus, the reason why a lot of ppl complain about battery life. Some people don't understand that the more you use the phone yeah the quicker the battery will die. It's not that the batter is bad or sucks it's just that it's being used to damn much.

I completely understand why multitasking was not implemented by 3rd party apps. The one thing that iPhone does better than a lot of phones is staying consistent with speed. No matter how many apps that are opened and closed the phone still ran smooth and quick especially 3GS. A lot of the other phones began lagging until you'd have to exit each app that is using memory. I use backgrounder and proswitcher but not all of my apps are backgrounded as there is no need. if i need an app to stay open i simply swipe up or hold the home button down for 1sec and the app is activated to remain open. I then, open up any other app i need. I would like Apple to implement something similar and i think it would help.

I guess we'll see what happens. I'm somewhat excited but i just don't want to get my hopes up about OS 4.0. I have a bad feeling 4.0 is just going to be 3.2 in diguise.... i REALLY hope i'm wrong!

I have to say that I run multitasking a lot with Circuitos and that thing is not draining battery as fast. I dont know why but if one guy outside appe can do this...Apple can do it 2. I run Beejive and Whatsapp mostly everyday on multitask..with also Phone and Mail app backgrounded by default.

Yea just speculation people, but I can see where it's daunting. I mean, it's Apple.

What I'm wondering is, if those multitasking capabilities are "activated" on the new iPhone, and only for a certain number of apps, could a dev possible use that to make it work system-wide? Granted it's jailbroken.

apple tab like multitasking would be good, as long as the switch is seamless. thats the only difference between springboard and multitasking: multitasking lets you switch apps in a fraction of a second; springboard takes 3-4 seconds to switch apps.

There might be "workarounds" to this, but why create more problems when there is a simple solution? I'll probably ditch Apple's "multitask" and stick to Backgrounder if this really is the case.
How would you even know that the email you received is an ABSOLUTE MUST to read? Also, depending on what game you're playing if you leave the app (while still backgrounded) to enter mail and check it you would get killed in the game or whatever. Like say if you're playing DinoSmash; are you going to leave DinoSmash to check your email even if it's backgrounded? lol i f u c king think not. Not all games can be paused before exiting.

What the hell's so wrong with Apple "controlling" the user experience?

I work for a very large mobile retailer in the uk, and all I see day after day is people ruining there "un-controlled" phones! Whether it's over loading what their phones capable of, or having a bluetoothed corrupt file running a mock at it's own will!

I like apples restrictions (altho their excuses are pants), we never ever get faulty iPhones handed back, just happy users :-D

And there is always jailbreaking, mine is jailbroken, and I have things like the "backgrounder", but let's be honest, how many of us have spent hours and hours restoring iPhones because of a interfering and alien cydia app or mod?

Well said WHO the f**** wants multitasking and what you gonna achieve.
What you wanna do like play game while watching movie or or writing a email while watching movie....

      What the f****

listen I am an busy person, always on the run, still I don't see any use of multitasking, this is the cry started by some stupid. Compitition, who just wanna be a cry baby.
ASK yourself how many window user actually work with 3-4 software at a time on their junky window os.
I tried in my window laptop and what I could see a hang OS which I have to hard restart.
I use powerful 16 GB power Mac and my new i7 with 8 GB ram, still I don't see any use of stupid multitasking.
And I can very well understand the reason why apple is going to restrict MT, because it slow your proccessor and kill the battery.
Now imagine apple give go ahead for all the apps MT enabled, your battery will die in few hours.
And all the blogs will be full with complaints nothing else.

My main use for proswitcher is switching back and forth between my shopping list and calculator. I add up my grocery bill as I shop to make sure I'm not in for a surprise at the register. Otherwise I could go without it.

So if your phone runs fine jailbroken then you see what i was saying about being restricted. If they would get off there high horses and listen to it's customers and give us what we want then we would not need a jailbreak that bad. But to give us something then restrict it for your own reasoning it's not fair to the consumer.
