  • Report: Rumors Were Right! iPhone OS 4.0 Will Include Full Multitasking Support

Until now, reports of full multitasking support on the iPhone have been based almost entirely on rumor and speculation. Ahead of Thursday's Apple event, it now appears that all the rumors and speculations will be vindicated. Kaufman Bros. analyst Shaw Wu revealed in research note that the new iPhone OS will be “a full multi-tasking environment where third-party apps will also be able to run simultaneously and/or in the background along with AAPL’s own apps.” Wu's sources inside Apple leaked the info shortly after Thursday's event was announced.

Wu was also successful in squeezing from his sources that Apple's rumored mobile advertising API is also a go, with Cupertino choosing to call the mobile marketing platform "iAd." Now, before you think Wu is a lone rebel on the front-lines of Apple news reporting, it should be noted that Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster is finally hearing the same "internal confirmations" from Apple that prompted Wu's earlier revelation.

Munster, however, is taking his iPhone OS 4.0 estimates further and proposing that we may also see a new home screen and wireless syncing with iTunes. Ultimately, though, the new iPhone software is merely a grand set-up for a “new, more powerful iPhone hardware,” which most of us are expecting this summer, per Apple's rich history of revealing new versions of the mega-popular handset in mid summer.

Wu also verbalized the thoughts of many upon learning of the new iPhone OS. This development, in fact, could ultimately prove far more significant for the iPad than it is for the iPhone. "We believe this will be particularly important for the iPad," writes Wu, "due to its much faster processor and much larger screen where users will more likely want the capability to run multiple applications much like most do with their PCs and Macs. We believe this will allow AAPL to deliver a fuller and more differentiated experience on the iPad helping drive greater adoption."

Apple's iPhone OS 4.0 preview event will take place at 10 a.m. Pacific on Thursday.

Also, why is everyone being so negative in advance? Just wait for the update to actually drop, then if it's as bad as you guys make it out to be, you can complain.
Because that's how a lot of people are. They like to complain about what they don't have and even when they're about to have it they'll still complain and not be hopeful. Nothing but ignorance on their part. Like you said, wait for it to come out and see how things play out then, make a realistic comment about it. But i guess that's just too much to ask for.

Are they going to cut off Multitasking from the 3G also..seeing perhaps the machine is not going to make it because it has nos a lot of Memory ??

I`m afraid that could Happend..Also they could only put that Multi tasking for only ChipA4...

So dont be so happy till we see the thing. Thats Apple!

And I think Apple should put some script that when you setup your iphone from scratch everytime or so.. you would be able to choose your Language and then the rest of languange should be deleted for SPACE, Performance etc...
having all that Languange I dont even Speak is causing a lot of space, performance drop, Apps loading bit slower etc..etc..
What do you guys think about that ???
so, remove the language files. That's what I have done, and it makes a big difference. There are other threads on here that tell you how to do it, but really, there's nothing to it-- just do it. Just be sure you don't remove the language that you speak!

(oh and look at that, 900 posts =])
Android has not really had a huge overhaul of their OS, so we cannot really speculate on whether it will cost money or not. I expect it will be like RIM's blackberry OS, where HUGE overhauls mean they will only work on the latest devices. Sure my BB Pearl has free updates, but I can't update to any of the new updates over the past 6-12 months because the unit is too old (apparently outdated and unworthy of updates to them means two years). With video games, updates are generally free because they want to lock out hackers and push more of their content to you. If you are buying their downloadable games on Wiiware, PSN network, Xbox live, etc. it is worth it for these companies to make the updates free. That said, no gaming console OS update has been as big a jump as going from 1.x.x-2.x.x-3.x.x on Apple's touch devices, and I do not doubt that the 3.x.x-4.0 jump will be any different.

The announcement better be good as I feel the iphone is falling behind.
The HTC Desire seems more and more appealing every time I look at it.

Don't get me wrong, I love my iphone when pwned. But since I connected to itunes by accident and got 3.1.3 and lost my jailbreak, I think to myself, do I really need this grief to get a phone that apple should have made in the begining ?

Thats why i'm seriously considering moveing on to the HTC desire.

Me 3! I love having that Dev account, for many reasons... now, for an extra $500 to bring my iPad home.
