  • Report: Rumors Were Right! iPhone OS 4.0 Will Include Full Multitasking Support

Until now, reports of full multitasking support on the iPhone have been based almost entirely on rumor and speculation. Ahead of Thursday's Apple event, it now appears that all the rumors and speculations will be vindicated. Kaufman Bros. analyst Shaw Wu revealed in research note that the new iPhone OS will be “a full multi-tasking environment where third-party apps will also be able to run simultaneously and/or in the background along with AAPL’s own apps.” Wu's sources inside Apple leaked the info shortly after Thursday's event was announced.

Wu was also successful in squeezing from his sources that Apple's rumored mobile advertising API is also a go, with Cupertino choosing to call the mobile marketing platform "iAd." Now, before you think Wu is a lone rebel on the front-lines of Apple news reporting, it should be noted that Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster is finally hearing the same "internal confirmations" from Apple that prompted Wu's earlier revelation.

Munster, however, is taking his iPhone OS 4.0 estimates further and proposing that we may also see a new home screen and wireless syncing with iTunes. Ultimately, though, the new iPhone software is merely a grand set-up for a “new, more powerful iPhone hardware,” which most of us are expecting this summer, per Apple's rich history of revealing new versions of the mega-popular handset in mid summer.

Wu also verbalized the thoughts of many upon learning of the new iPhone OS. This development, in fact, could ultimately prove far more significant for the iPad than it is for the iPhone. "We believe this will be particularly important for the iPad," writes Wu, "due to its much faster processor and much larger screen where users will more likely want the capability to run multiple applications much like most do with their PCs and Macs. We believe this will allow AAPL to deliver a fuller and more differentiated experience on the iPad helping drive greater adoption."

Apple's iPhone OS 4.0 preview event will take place at 10 a.m. Pacific on Thursday.

I agree, i can barely get a full day on my 3Gs. rather not have it go down to a 2 hour battery life phone, instead of 4

Can anyone say, new iPhone only supported? They will probably make something up about battery life and it will be a iPhone 4G exclusive. And this is very obvious, by the way. Apple knows and we know they would be in big trouble if the new OS did not have multitasking.

Tiger - Leopard - Snow Leopard... same concept. "Minor" updates within the same overall OS are free. 10.6 > 10.6.2 >10.6.3 but when you go up to 10.7 this is considered a "major" update and warrants a fee.

It's anticipated that the annoucment of the new iPhone will take place at this event also. Usually Apple does this a couple months before the in store/ship date much like the last 3 iPhones and the iPad.
Why don't Android/BlackBerry/gaming console/etc. users have to pay for updates then? And I didn't think they announced the 3G S at the 3.0 event last year, they only announced it like a month before its release, and no iPhone has been released before June in the past.

(oh and look at that, 900 posts =])

Are they going to cut off Multitasking from the 3G also..seeing perhaps the machine is not going to make it because it has nos a lot of Memory ??

I`m afraid that could Happend..Also they could only put that Multi tasking for only ChipA4...

So dont be so happy till we see the thing. Thats Apple!

And I think Apple should put some script that when you setup your iphone from scratch everytime or so.. you would be able to choose your Language and then the rest of languange should be deleted for SPACE, Performance etc...
having all that Languange I dont even Speak is causing a lot of space, performance drop, Apps loading bit slower etc..etc..
What do you guys think about that ???
I am looking forward to the official announcement on Thursday to find out if there IS a hardware limitation. My 3g runs multi-tasks via backgrounder and proswitcher so i know the hardware can handle it. Not much change if any to battery life doing so either. If 4.0 is full support on a 3g i may have to upgrade, possibly before a jb is available as that the multitasking is really all i use the jb for. No need for an unlock, and the other items i have installed and running are NOT something i HAVE to have to be happy. Just my 2 cents

I'll happily pay for a firmware update on my ipad as long as they are worth it. I recently paid to upgrade my MacBook from tiger to leopard. No big deal as it's the standard for the computing industry. Unless your a cheap arse that's used to downloading updates from warez sites. Lol

I`m also running Backgrounder with Circuitos but sometimes it just lagggss. Only 2 App extra can be backgrounded except for PHONE app, Mail App, Ipod app, that aleady can be running backgrounded but I personally always Kill them.
But as for that I remain with 40Mb free and only 2 Apps can be run togheter like BEEJIVE and FB...what ever come after...one of the 2 will be killed automaticly..
thats for me on my 3G..

As we all know, Apple has always copied features that we had before on jailbreak, hope this update has multitasking at last.
