  • iPhoneOS 4.0 Finally To Be Revealed Thursday

At long last, the elusive, highly-rumored-about iPhone OS 4.0 is to be unveiled this Thursday at 10 AM PST (1 PM EST). Apple has sent out invitations to various media sources about the keynote, so you can expect many Apple liveblogs, like Gizmodo, Engadget, and MacRumors to cover the event as it unfolds.

If you've been around the iPhone scene since last year, you'll remember that Apple surprised quite a few of us with some features we began to think may never hit the iPhone, like copy/paste, MMS, and stereo Bluetooth. Could multitasking be that big ball-drop this year? We'll just have to find out!

      Skinning

Since 4.0 is obviously gonna need something to be big, multitasking does seem the most likely.

to us its no big deal but apple will call multitasking groundbreaking

Multitasking sounds useful, but it might eat up your RAM.

I don't think Apple will ever support theming on the iPhone. They don't on the Mac, other than backgrounds and contextual menus, and even then you have only 2 Apple-provided choices.

Will modmyi ever fix their site? My browser keeps closing when reading forums and it's the only forum that does it too so it's not on my end.

Not sure but I browse quite a few forums and none of them just close like this and none show errors on the page either. It's just kind of annoying when trying to read up on them and you have to keep re-opening the page.

You will never see (official) themes on the iPhone. Never. We'll get maybe a wallpaper option but thats about it.

You will also never see flash. Jobs hates flash but have you ever asked why? I'll tell you why: flash on the mac sucks. Hard. Yes it "runs" and "works" but under the hood it's a unstable unmanagable mess. Apple has tried consistently to play ball with adobe into making flash play nicer, but adobe hasn't done a thing.

I'll have to look for the link: but out of the hundreds of repeated bug report / crashes sent to adobe, they took care of like 20-30. Theve made no effort at all because they ride on the "everyone needs flash!" wagon.

Well guess what? We're moving on from you, flash. Don't let the door hit you on the way out!

The web moves fast but has done a surprising job of keeping legacy software going. If it works, why fix it? It hasn't been until recently that hardware/developers have taken a stronger and stricter approach as to what they support. Heck, take Windows Mobile 7, they have some pretty high system requirements to even use it on a phone model.

Flash is pretty much embedded to the internet in general. It'll be years of slow decline as more open and efficient standards such as HTML5 gain in support.

Flash is something I feel safe in saying the iPhone will never support. Jobs tends to be pretty stead-fast on what works for Apple. Take MMS for example. Took them years to buckle on that. As old and outdated as MMS is, which by the way I still feel is pointless with email on the phone, it's a legacy piece of communications so entrenched in everyone's daily use that there's no other way around it, they had to support it.
