  • Mod My Glasses: Apple Working on iPhone/iPod Spectacles?

Our friends at Patently Apple have uncovered a patent application from Apple that reveals a rather unorthodox endeavor that modifies the iPhone into... a pair of glasses. In what appears to be a next-gen video headset device, the project suggested by the schematics provided seemingly reveal an endeavor that builds upon Apple's recent history of tinkering with "laser based binocular near-eye display and light engine systems."

While it isn't exactly clear what Apple's paramount objective is with this prototype, it's fairly evident that the "device" is built for unique multimedia experiences. The dedicated frame appears suited for encasing either an iPhone or iPod touch. The patent suggests controls would be both manual and also voice or movement initiated. Then again, it also isn't picture perfect yet as to how and why any controls would be used. The design, however, hints at a picture-in-picture feature. Nonetheless, the ability to maintain some form of peripheral vision for basic navigation appears provided for - because I'm sure a lot of people will, you know, drive to work with a pair of these on

According to the patent images, the iPhone's camera would be integral to the function of the glasses, which could very well prove the ultimate gaming accessory. Incredibly, the sophisticated communication interface would allow the bearer of these goggles to operate a portable electronic device via controls on the headset or even a remote control.

Needless to say, it's far too premature to speculate as to when this patent will actually manifest into a viable product - assuming, of course, that it ever will. But the possibilities are staggering. And if there's anything we've learned from past analysis of Apple patents, it's that, on occasion, Cupertino lets us know far more than we may realize about what the tech wizards at Apple are toiling with.

I got my Media glasses since 3 years ago using it with my iphone, it works great but of course it is not designed just for the iPhone, it dont have a mic or movement detector, but I can see movies like I am in a theather with surround sound. This technology is old but all they are going to do is add some extra things, maybe like mic, movement detector or maybe transparency so you can see thru them while you are driving or walking. I use them while I'm traveling and everybody look at me like I'm an alien. That's good when you don't want that nobody know what you are watching.

      Thats cool, but nothing new

      Here are some images

wow.. these look like the most expensive specs/goggles ever.. plus how are they going to make it so you can see? use a transparent plastic?? or a camera on it? even if they use a camera and have a screen it will be too close to even see it.

Try this: Put your ipod/iphone up close to your eyes, about as far as glasses go and see if you can make anything out, without destroying your eyes.
To me this whole concept is going to be trashed along with many other apple "inventions".

With this ones you can adjust the focus and the size of the screen, I think if they add a camera you are going to be able to adjust it too.

I think a decent percentage of Apple's profits are from intended lawsuits.

Apple would never come out with something that gawky. they are 50 percent ascetic and in that they try to bring new technologies. this will not become a reality.

Next Apple will patent the flying car . . .

It just strikes me as ridiculous that it seems like they just steal popular science fiction ideas of technologies (like multi-touch in Minority Report) and patent them without, as in this case, always actually making them into real products.

We all saw Minority Report and we all thought "Yeah, we totally want that" and kudos to them for making it actually happen before anyone else -- but they shouldn't get a Patent an idea that already existed in everyone's head long before the technology existed to make it possible.

Here we have another example, head-mounted displays have been around for ages, and people have always dreamed of seeing them improved *significantly* to the point of usefulness. You can't have exclusive rights to the *idea* that's been around for ages. You'll make enough money just by being first to actualize the idea . . . That should be good enough. A patent is a government-granted temporary MONOPOLY. It should only be applied to inventions of true innovation. Something nobody else ever thought of. Doing what everybody else was already thinking or trying to do, but doing it better, is not what a patent is meant to protect.
