  • Opera Mini In the Hands of App Store Approval Process

It appears that Opera have finally finished up their final touches on their long-awaited Internet browser for iPhone, as they have revealed that it has finally been submitted to the App Store. They even have posted a counter displaying EXACTLY how much time has passed since it was submitted for approval (Apple had better take heed of this unless they want some bad publicity for the App Store). Opera claims their browser to be up to six times faster than the built-in Safari.

There have been other "alternative" browsers released on the iPhone; however, they are all based on "webkit," the web-rendering engine used by Safari. They aren't in themselves new browsers; the are only front-ends to Safari's solution to display the web. Of course, they may also get denied for "duplicating functionality," as many apps already have, including GV Mobile, which has since ended up on Cydia.

if it is better than safari (which it is) then the only place where it can call home is cydia...

They can simply blame a nice long delay due to the increased number of ipad apps that are going in.

Plus, I'm sure the last thing apple wants is everyone installing opera on their new ipads, making it an even more revolutionary browsing experience.

I was running Opera Beta on a Samsung Omnia and I loved it. I thought it was already out for the iPhone. I can't wait for it to get released.

If the App store desoent approve it(which the should), can we still get it thru Cydia or another back alley app???

I have read somewhere that this has been rejected by apple so what are the chances of it coming to cydia.

Take any news you hear today with a grain of salt. It's April fool's day.

That thread was posted yesterday but even so its more likely going to be true, apple hates any competiton and i can't see it changing for opera.

It's not like it really does compete because anytime you open a link it automatically goes it safari. Apple is going to be getting a lot of nasty emails soon if they reject it though. Their practices put them right on the edge of being sued. Personally, I can't wait for that to happen.

I agree with you there I for one will not be very happy about it, there has been far too many reasonable applications turned away from the appstore because they offer competition to apples brand. I don't use safari anywhere else apart from the iphone i would much rather use firefox but that is never going to happen either.

You guys do know this isn't really a full-fledged browser, right? It has no JavaScript, broken css support and handles almost everything through proxy so you can't use private sites with it.

So even if it gets approved, this is strictly a "quick browse news site" browser and that's about it.
