  • Rumor: All Best Buy Sales Associates Getting Free iPad 2

Although this story came as a surprise to my contacts on the sales floor of a Best Buy retail outlet, a new report from Forbes claims that all floor sales associates may soon find a sweet present at work with their name on it - a new iPad 2. Why? Although the company didn't do this (nationwide, at least) for the release of the first-generation iPad, it's thought that Best Buy wants its sales team to be well-acquainted with the product and effectively sell units of the refreshed tablet in an expedient fashion.

If Best Buy goes through with the free iPad 2 program, the effort would be part of the company's Connected Store initiative, which effectively aims to achieve the previously stated goal - to make sales associates more familiar or "connected" with hot new products. Best Buy tried this approach in limited fashion last year, giving away a variety of gadgets to sales associates. It isn't yet clear what - if anything - Best Buy learned from the program or if its worth expanding.

Of course, if the sources speaking to Forbes are correct, Best Buy must feel that there's adequate incentive to pushing the iPad 2 to all of its on-floor sales reps. Naturally, however, that reality would represent quite a costly undertaking in and of itself. Best Buy is presently believed to have close to 200,000 employees nationwide, although it isn't clear what portion of that number consists of eligible on-floor sales reps.

Seriously? Don't read the freakin' articles if you don't like what he has to say! Is it really that hard to understand? If you don't like Mexican food then you don't go to Mexican restaurants...pretty simple.

I don't think BB is going to give ALL their employees iPad 2's.

I redirect your message right back at you. Don't read his posts if you don't like what he has to say. Maybe he likes Mexican food but doesn't like crappy, poorly prepared Mexican food that's full of BS. But he has the right to an opinion just like you.

I'm thinking this too. They're prolly getting one to use on the sales floor but not to take home.

You just did the same thing as him but with his post. Also its a forum not a Mexican restaurant, different rules apply.

Anyway. Back on topic, I think what they're trying to say is that best buy might do some kind of loaner/in-store assigned iPad system to get it's employees accustomed to the "connected" lifestyle to show customers what it's all about. Like how when I worked at apple they gave me free MobileMe and I didn't give a crap about it until I actually had it, and now I absolutely love it.

Read the same thing. "welcome to the mmi spin zone". And yes, every writer should have a grammar/editor.

BTW. What is up with the Mexican food issue here? Kinda rude...I like Mexican food. Lol

Everyone down to the cashier? Sounds costly...but I'm sure they can afford it.

Ok, let me clear this up. I work at a Connected Store in Pittsburgh. They are not going to be giving every sales associate an iPad for personal use, they are for sales associates when they are working! We have them now!

They are used to help employees do research, check inventory, and access channels. Trust me, I wish I was getting a free iPad.

What'd I say! Giving away free product wont help sales.. it'll hurt them and get nothing more... Giving the employees an iPad gives them the hands on experience to help be better informed without having to shell out $500+ per employee...

      Common sense people...

My point is that he doesn't have to read the whole article or any article that Messany writes if he doesn't like them. Instead he does and then complains about it...I think a lot of ppl are tired of reading complaints about articles when the solution is really easy, just don't read it/them!

The Mexican food thing was just an example...granted it was a poor one, but still. I personally love Mexican food

Are you sure it's not a Mexican restaurant??......lol

It's obvious I'm not the only one who feels this way about ppl posting complaints like that...they're pointless and get old.

So are most of Essany's articles. And most of the time I personally don't read them. But this one was just too bad to ignore. I mean, really. How can you take from this story that best buy was giving out free ipads. That's just really really dumb.

Someone, with your (lack of) grammatical prowess, should not be judging anyone based on their writing ability.

On Topic: I doubt that they are giving the devices away for employees to keep. It is probably a decision to let employees, who work in appropriate areas, carry a display model around with them. It's not likely that the "free" devices will actually go home with anyone.

There is precedent for this though. Cellular service sales "agents" routinely get MASSIVE discounts on new gear. This is why many of them have the latest phones, every time you walk in. Same thing in clothing retailers... Have you ever seen a poorly dressed employee in Macy's?

IF BestBuy does anything more than offer a deep discount, or "floor models," that get passed to the next person at shift change, I'll be very surprised.

I'm tired of people criticizing our writers. It's almost as annoying as seeing these "winners" who say they're 1st. Yet there's no prize for being first in a forum. So, maybe they /aren't/ winners.

I wish the Mods would remove this kind of trash just as they now do for being "1st".

Messany has a lot of writings in which are just rumors..... Some people like that kind of stuff. Some people however like only factual stuff.... But as everyone has previously stated, if you don't like it, don't read it.

If it weren't for Messany, we'd have a lot more complaints about lack of news. So read it if you like his articles, or read something else. It's not a tough decision. JMO.
