  • Apple Now Selling iPhones without requiring AT&T contract in US.

It was bound to happen, sooner or later.

Last week, Google started selling unlocked Nexus One phones compatible with AT&T's 3G protocols. And today, AT&T announced that it's going to be selling Palm Pre smartphones and Dell's Android 1.5 based Aero. There's no way of knowing if these pieces of news are connected, but after a flurry of tweets and rumors, Apple employees have confirmed that the iPhone will be available without a contract in the US. UPDATE: Gizmodo got a copy of the internal Apple documentation that details this.

    $499 for an 8GB 3G, $599 for a 16GB 3GS and $699 for a 32GB 3GS. Or $99 for a reconditioned iPhone and blacksn0w for free.

    Choice: it's a wonderful thing.

okay, the phone is NOT unlocked, as in you could buy it and right out of the box slip in a T-Mobile SIM card and be done. but what this DOES mean is that you buy the phone for around $600-700 and its not tied to an AT&T contract. then all you have to do is use blacksn0w to unlock, and there you go. i believe this is why the title referred to 'unlocked' iphones.

^No you can't use blacksn0w. These phones will be coming with the newest firmware update pre-installed, so no unlock.
The reason for the ex-title was because the author of the post misunderstood his sources.

You could always do this. I paid $599 over a year ago for my 3GS without a contract from my local applestore.

It dosent say that its unlocked. Your still going to have to go get it unlocked *someway*. Hmm i think apple is actually promoting jailbreaking since there selling it for full price without a contract with att, but its still locked to att network. And everyone knows the best and easiest way to unlock an iPhone is jailbreaking. And you get other benefits too.... I guess its mainly for people that want to give the iphone as a present without extending there own contract. Why would you buy a full price iphone directly from apple or att.... but im guessing the iphone will be with the new bootloader and loaded with the updated stock 3.1.3 right.... so yea jailbreaking might not be the choice.... hate tethered boot

This is ridiculously old news. This has always been available.

Also, it's cheaper to get an ATT contract and cancel it after your first month. Please do the math.

      So retarded.

You can go into any apple store, pay full price 599 or 699 and walk out with a new, sealed iphone...no SSN or ATT account or contract needed.

So your saying I can buy a brand new iPhone and use it as an unlimited 'pay as you go phone'? That means $60 for unlimited talk and text + $30 data plan? Sweet! All hail Apple...

AT&T started selling the iPhone 3G and 3GS like this a couple weeks ago. My neighbor purchased a 3G 2 weeks ago with no contract and no AT&T account. I then helped him jailbreak and unlocked it.

you guys do realize if you take the phone you just bought without a contract, take your sim card and pop it into the phone, plug it into itunes. It's going to want you to activate it with a 2 year contract. Even if the phone is a used phone your friend gave you, brand new from att store, or no contract. It's going to want a two year contract unless you hacktivate or call att to add the imei and sent ota to phone. I don't get why you guys are excited about this Apple and AT&T has pretty much crapped on their customers for this blunder.
