    It was bound to happen, sooner or later.

    Last week, Google started selling unlocked Nexus One phones compatible with AT&T's 3G protocols. And today, AT&T announced that it's going to be selling Palm Pre smartphones and Dell's Android 1.5 based Aero. There's no way of knowing if these pieces of news are connected, but after a flurry of tweets and rumors, Apple employees have confirmed that the iPhone will be available without a contract in the US. UPDATE: Gizmodo got a copy of the internal Apple documentation that details this.


    $499 for an 8GB 3G, $599 for a 16GB 3GS and $699 for a 32GB 3GS. Or $99 for a reconditioned iPhone and blacksn0w for free.

    Choice: it's a wonderful thing.

      Is that the regular cost of an iPhone? Seems a few hundred dollars more...Would've bought regular $199 and Jailbreak for free!

      all I hope is that the other providers give better price for 3g service on iphone because att is very expensive.

      i truly believe that if apple really wanted to dominate the smartphone market they only need to make the new iPhone work on other carrier's 3G networks. Although with Sprint rolling out 4G and at the rate other carriers are upgrading their networks internally, it's really only a matter of time before this happens.

      Guys, think about this, why would apple sell iphones without a contract if they know they wont be unlocked? obviously theyre charging more for them because they are factory unlocked...Actually, my iPhone got wet (salt water from the beach; fail) yesterday and today i went to apple and said they will give me a brand new 3G without a contract for $150; i told them the phone was going overseas.

      im pretty sure iPhones without contract are factory unlocked.

      iPhones without a contract are just that. They are still locked to AT&T in the US. Its called an "exclusivity agreement". Google it if need be.

      I sure they are just doing this so they don't have to check everytime to make sure you have a valid contract with ATT. Save them some time.

      I feel sorry for u guys in the US. We can use any carrier we want here in Australia. Its been that way since they were released

      Agreed! Which brings me back to my point that this thread is WORTHLESS. Members are STILL reading the first page or two and assuming that they can buy an iPhone factory unlocked......
