  • Apple Now Selling iPhones without requiring AT&T contract in US.

It was bound to happen, sooner or later.

Last week, Google started selling unlocked Nexus One phones compatible with AT&T's 3G protocols. And today, AT&T announced that it's going to be selling Palm Pre smartphones and Dell's Android 1.5 based Aero. There's no way of knowing if these pieces of news are connected, but after a flurry of tweets and rumors, Apple employees have confirmed that the iPhone will be available without a contract in the US. UPDATE: Gizmodo got a copy of the internal Apple documentation that details this.

    $499 for an 8GB 3G, $599 for a 16GB 3GS and $699 for a 32GB 3GS. Or $99 for a reconditioned iPhone and blacksn0w for free.

    Choice: it's a wonderful thing.

According to the documents, the phones are NOT unlocked. Please change the title of this thread so people (like me) don't get excited over nothing.

So misleading...there's no difference in what happens now except not proving you have an AT&T account...

No way, it is easier for the mmi writers to just jump to conclusions and post far fetched stories.

How is this even news though? I bought a 3GS without a contract when it came out for full retail of $599.

I told them I was going to use it as an ipod and in the future would look into getting an att plan.

Lots of people have purchased iPhones without contracts from apple, you just have to pay the full unsubsidized price, which for 3GS is $599 for 16GB and $699 for 32GB.

I think this article IS big news! After reading the article about all the things people must do to get an ipad before release, I feel like this shows apple actually cares some about it's customers..

well, I was about to celebrate this news but read the fine print "unsubsidized full price iphones" I would not pay $599 for 3GS with 3.1.3 baseband 5.12 knowing its an expensive paperweight before I go make the purchase. BTW I'm on Tmobile.

      Damn it!!!!

I got all excited thinking "Finally, factory unlocked iPhones in the US!!"

The only reason I jailbreak is so I can use it on T-Mobile. If they started selling factory unlocked iPhones, I'd be camping out for the next iPhone and happy to pay full retail!
