  • Crackdown on Devs Who Speak Ill of Apple?

Developer Tommy Refenes has attracted the attention of a substantial number of his developer peers this weekend. Refenes' game "Zits & Giggles" was yanked from the App Store a few days ago without the developer receiving any word from Apple as to why the pimple-popping game for the iPhone and iPod Touch was dumped.

One possible explanation? Last week Refenes verbally shredded Apple during the "Indie Gamemakers Rant" at The Game Developers Conference. Calling the App Store "awful" and "horrible," Refenes lambasted Apple on multiple fronts, even referring to the iPhone's gaming platform as being comparable to the cheesy Tiger Electronics LCD games that first rose to popularity almost two decades ago.

As a result of the app getting yanked on the heels of Refenes' controversial and derogatory comments, some are wondering if Apple is cracking down on devs who speak negatively of the App Store. Sound far fetched? Indeed, it does, especially when another component of this story is exposed. Refenes has consistently and incongruously elevated the price of his game in the App Store. And we're not talking about modest increases. According to PC World, which also covered this situation and the "other side" of the story, Refenes has hiked the price of his app to unreasonably high levels that could have naturally provoked some concern from Apple. As the app's price jumped from $15 all the way to $400, it's quite reasonable that Apple pulled Zits & Giggles over pricing issues, not the developer's disparaging remarks.

Although Apple has certainly thrown its weight around in many aspects of business and applications development in the past, it's monumentally difficult to accept the idea that Refenes got the boot due to his less-than-friendly words alone. If not for the dramatic and outrageous price increases of what amounts to a fairly silly app, it's highly probable that the game would still be for sale in the "awful" and "horrible" App Store.

$15 seems like $15 too much. He was taking the Mick.
Apple appear to be making an attempt at cleaning up the App store which is a good thing.
Does anyone think he was being serious by putting the price up to $400? While Developers deserve to be paid for their work he priced himself out opf the market so was just wasting space in the App store.

I'm with Apple on this one...I'll take 'authoritarian' if it means getting rid of developers like that. Too many overpriced apps in the store anyway. Next thing you know, he'll put it on Android and BB for $1000.

I only have a problem with this in that it appears to have been pulled secondary to his commentary...not purely because his product was "overpriced" in our opinions.

it makes Apple look petty when they do stuff like this, and it doesn't make me feel comfortable about the future of the AppStore.

Yeah, and when you accidentally buy it you'll be the one looking for a refund from Apple, and going ballistic cos some guy 'ripped you off'

it's stories such as this that are only putting Apple in a position for some type of anti-trust lawsuit in the future.

After the developer paying to put the app on the store, having it accepted and sold, then receiving no notification on why it was removed just sounds bad on Apple's part.

I honestly wish there was a way to allow completely open development, but unfortunately that's reserved for things like Android and WP7S. (Yay free SDKs!)

This is why I have NO ISSUE on raising my middle finger to Apple and proudly holding my JB/UL phone up in the air. I have said it 1000 times. Do they have the best product ? IMOHO, yes. Hands down. Should they charge a premium for that product. Yep. BUT.......DO NOT wrap your hands around MY NECK and tell me what to do with my phone.

      What an arrogant P r i c k Jobs is.

I don't disagree with your assessment. I think this dev was stupid on many accounts and received what he deserved. What I don't like about Apple's practices, is why let these Apps into the Appstore in the first place. You might say Appple is trying to clean up the appstore. I don't agree. Even now, I see apps approved and then later evicted from the Appstore with no communication to the consumers who purchased them. And Apple is definately playing the role of the "Soup Nazi". No App for you!

I think Apple should disclose why an app was removed to all the people who purchased them. I purchased a Video Recorder app called "Qik Video Camera" which was better than the rest in Appstore. Now, it is possible the developer may have used non approved methods to achieve those results, but who knows. I think as consumers in Apple's Appstore, we are entitled to know when an app is removed from the AppStore and why and whether it is an end of life cycle for the app or the developer.
