  • Japanese Live Link 3G Enables iPhone Video Calls Without Jailbreak

It looks like some of us may not have to wait for the 4th generation iPhone (or later) to enjoy video calls on our iPhones. Live Link 3G, a Japanese-developed application from Yudo Inc., makes it possible for two iPhone users to share a video call. And according to early reviews, the app supports a fairly high-quality video/audio transmission between users.

A recent addition to the Japanese iPhone app store, Live Link 3G likely foreshadows a staple of future generations of the iPhone. Apple chief Steve Jobs said earlier this year that the next iPhone version will be an "A+" upgrade from the current model. Of course, we won't know until June (maybe) when the 4th gen iPhone is expected to arrive whether the handset will actually enable video calls - one of the most sought after features from iPhone users.

For now, Live Link 3G presents a possible look at the future. Granted, of course, it remains a glimpse that leaves one wanting. In the absence of a front-facing camera, the popular Japanese app is really more of a video conferencing tool for users to show each other their surrounding locations. That is, if both iPhone callers simultaneously looked into the camera, they wouldn't be able to see one another. And, for the most part, that kind of defeats the true nature of a video call.

For another week or so, Live Link 3G is available for free from the Japanese app store. That's right, no jailbreak required for this nifty little app. Past March 22nd, however, the app will cost a pretty penny - 1,000 yen, or $11 in the US.

Well, I downloaded it (before you removed it) and installed it on 2 different iphone 3g's. I can get it to run on both phones but can't get them to connect to each other after entering my keyword into both.

It's quite a stretch to say it's piracy because it's not publicly released. What exactly does publicly released mean? Do you mean officially released? In that case are all the tasKs and mods " piracy" ?

      Edit: tweaks

      Since you dont understand....

If the creator/author/developer - owner (whether its free or not) did not release it to you (the public) then that is piracy, plain and simple.

Something doesnt have to have a price tag on it to be stolen.

oh, I understand, but maybe you don't.

Let me ask you this. Is your iPhone and all it's software the same as it was when apple sold it?

I had the idea of making (and patenting?) a mini mirror when those other apps did this. I cant remember the name of the apps now. But there is a way to use it for video calls. Get a bigger mirror! Sit in front of your dresser mirror, bathroom mirrow (okay, maybe not the bathroom) and the camera will show your reflection while you look at the screen. Kinda ghetto, but hey, it'll work till the 4g is out.

And its not warez. It was (is) available on the Japanese app store. I'd like to get it, so if someone wants to pm me the address, Id appreciate it.

If you do use the big mirror idea, I take donations! (just kidding)

Im not going to argue an invalid point with you.

This forum has rules, I could care less what you wanna do elsewhere, but here you follow them.

PS- And modifying your iphone is NOT illegal, just because Apple frowns on it. Piracy is.

wow...[Effenpig!] zero1 downloaded an app for which HE paid for [1000 yen/$11] then he turned around ripped it and offered it to us free. i dont know how much closer to pirated material you can get here. the original developer of this app isnt seeing any money from all of you who have downloaded or were gonna download this pirated version.

I'm not condoning piracy, I wouldn't crack apps even if I knew how. I think if you can't afford a $.99 app you shouldn't have an iPhone in the first place.
I'm saying it's extremely self righteous and hypocritical for anyone on /this/ site, to say that modifying a free program is "piracy"

If that is truly anyones stance, and not just self righteous posturing, then they should immeditely restore
there iPhone to a factory state.

no its not retarded, they can sell a scope that works to redirect it , its not nice to say that other peoples hard work is retarded because its irrelevant to you
