  • iPhone Jailbreaking with iDongle: Where's the Fun In That?

Could it be that the future of jailbreaking will be made so simple that we'll hardly remember the good old days of blood, sweat, and tears shed by many a jailbreaker?

Although it's been discussed in the forums of ModMyi in the recent past, there's a lot of emergent talk and - surprisingly - some decent media coverage about the iDongle, a work-in-progress hardware solution designed not only to jailbreak iPhones, but also to recover partially jailbroken handsets. The creator reveals on myboyfriendisageek.com that the iDongle will rescue an iPhone trapped in recovery mode. The iDongle works with the iPhone 3GS and the iPod Touch (2G and 3G) running OS 3.1, 3.1.1 or 3.1.2, the later of which is most highly recommended. At present, the device won't work on OS v3.1.3.

So (if you're not already familiar) what's the iDongle all about?

This is a standalone piece of hardware able to boot your jailbreaked device (a.k.a “tethered boot”), and optionally to jailbreak and hacktivate it if not already done.
The little gadget runs off a 9V battery since the data port pushes out no power during the iPhone's boot mode. For the time being, only a dozen working prototypes are in existence, as the maker is actively seeking to "raise funds" in order to build an inventory of iDongles. He's selling the device for what amounts to about $41, or 30 euros.

As of the last update on his website, the iDongle creator says the devices should be ready by Monday. Anyone planning on making a purchase to see what the iDongle can do... assuming you haven't already done it yourself - the "old fashioned" way?

This would be extremely useful for people with a tethered jailbreak that need to reboot and don't have their computer handy.

      Twitter says:
"site down ... Working on it"
      "Up again! ...."

So I guess the traffic is causing issues?

I miss the old days of jailbreaking my first iPhone; downloading several applications; typing in long commands in terminal; following multiple pages of instructions all while walking two miles in the snow ;-) Kids these days have it so easy... ra1n

Seriously, this would be nice to have in my bag -- I had to replace my iPhone recently so now I am stuck with tethered jailbreak.

Notice the gloves and what appears to be an anti static pad. I sure hope they plan on putting some sort of housing around it.

Well, compared to any other kind of battery except for C's and D's...it's huge. Especially since it's for something that is supposed to be in your pocket for when you need it.

But anyway, I'm really looking forward to this.

^^^^^ agreed. Hate to break out the old "Back in my day" speech but
I remember when JB/Unlocking used to be reserved for a dedicated few. You had to at least know your way around a computer and sometimes have hours to dedicate for the process. But the experience was gratifying seeing your hard work pay off in the end.

Mixed feelings about the product in question... on one hand, im really glad it will help a wider audience and bring new/fresh people into the JB community; on the other, a part of me resents advances like these which basically spoon feed people the JB/Unlock.... No real appreciation of what it used to take... which in turn might lead to > whining/complaining when the next program wont take less than 30 seconds to completely JB your phone...

      Rant over

Geohot asked if anyone was interested but all the replies were just whinging so he didn't bother.

If I had a tethered JB I would buy one of these.

this is so true so many ideas now in the iPhone OS came from jailbrake app devs getting valid ideas out and apple goes and takes there spin on it and adds it to the next model / firmware
