  • iPhone Jailbreaking with iDongle: Where's the Fun In That?

Could it be that the future of jailbreaking will be made so simple that we'll hardly remember the good old days of blood, sweat, and tears shed by many a jailbreaker?

Although it's been discussed in the forums of ModMyi in the recent past, there's a lot of emergent talk and - surprisingly - some decent media coverage about the iDongle, a work-in-progress hardware solution designed not only to jailbreak iPhones, but also to recover partially jailbroken handsets. The creator reveals on myboyfriendisageek.com that the iDongle will rescue an iPhone trapped in recovery mode. The iDongle works with the iPhone 3GS and the iPod Touch (2G and 3G) running OS 3.1, 3.1.1 or 3.1.2, the later of which is most highly recommended. At present, the device won't work on OS v3.1.3.

So (if you're not already familiar) what's the iDongle all about?

This is a standalone piece of hardware able to boot your jailbreaked device (a.k.a “tethered boot”), and optionally to jailbreak and hacktivate it if not already done.
The little gadget runs off a 9V battery since the data port pushes out no power during the iPhone's boot mode. For the time being, only a dozen working prototypes are in existence, as the maker is actively seeking to "raise funds" in order to build an inventory of iDongles. He's selling the device for what amounts to about $41, or 30 euros.

As of the last update on his website, the iDongle creator says the devices should be ready by Monday. Anyone planning on making a purchase to see what the iDongle can do... assuming you haven't already done it yourself - the "old fashioned" way?

I guess the new iphones come preloaded with 3.1.3 because i bought a brand new 32GB 3gs and it had 3.1.3 on it.

down in my area of Miami, there are cell phone shops that charge $20 to jailbreak iphones. I do miss the feeling of accomplishment I used to get when I would spend close to an hour trying to figure out a jailbreak. Now, insert phone here, click rain, walk way.

I remember the days of jailbreaking and using manzana to apply themes, and the app store was only a dream...

I would assume it would have some sort of a read/write memory to flash if a newer exploit were found.

This is pretty awesome. This could help implement just one more strike to apple's gut and with consistent blows they might just finally allow jailbreaking. Not to say it will happen now or ever.

When does new iphone os get released?

I would assume its release would come in conjunction with the new iPhone this summer...

What about all your Cydia apps and configs ?
Are they still intact after breaking ?

I think this is more focused towards people looking for a solution to there tethered jailbreak. Most of my friends that aren't comfortable doing a jailbreak just ask me to do it. They aren't going to shell out money for a dongle they know nothing about. So its not really a revolutionary all in one jailbreaker. It's nice to see something that you can stash in your glove box for an "emergency" though.

How does this new thing work? Does it plug into the bottom of the device?
Oh, lucky you! The 1.0.2 days were REALLY scary!

Also stop whining about how hard it was to jailbreak back in the day. No one really cares how seasoned you are. I've been around since the first iphone and it doesn't bother me at all that jailbreaking has evolved to a point where the average person can unlock there phones potential. Stop being so self righteous...

apple needs the jailbreak community.. we are the biggest source of beta testers for them to make money off of in the end. I know this isnt the correct thread but thanks to all devs that have put hours of there time into making great stuff for us to use at little or no cost.

What it does is untether you from your computer. It means that instead of having to get to a computer you can carry this around instead. You are still tethered, but to a pocket size dongle instead of a computer.

The recent announcement by geohot will probably kill the market for this device, since most people would have probably only used it because of tethered jailbreaks.

Quote from Stealthbravo "Nice concept. The guy better make as much money as he can before April 10."

it's seems as though he saw this coming? He must be " in the loop"
