  • Report: iPhone OS 4.0 to Support Multitasking

AppleInsider is quoting "people with a proven track record in predicting Apple's technological advances" as saying that the next major release of the iPhone OS will support multitasking: the holy grail of many enthusiasts. The informants - who asked that the details remain secret as development on the new OS has "a way to go" - say there will be new "multi-tasking manager" software as part of iPhone 4.0, and that the main obstacles to multitasking up until now have been battery life and security.

The iPhone OS is based on the same Mach microkernel that is at the heart of Mac OS X, and so is already capable of multitasking. Apple enabled this for certain native apps - such as iPod and Messages - so that you can get SMS notifications and play music while doing other things. Up until now, the sources say, the main reason Apple has avoided allowing third-party apps to run in the background is to pre-emptively prohibit any spyware or malicious code from being run on the iPhone. Secondary reasons include resource management and battery life. So what might have changed to allow Apple to reconsider?

Probably the most significant development is Apple's new A4. The energy efficient system-on-a-chip, reportedly allowing ten hours of video playback, will power the iPad and is widely rumored as the heart of the next generation iPhone. This could render concerns about battery life moot, at least on newer devices, and Apple may use this as an inducement to owners of current iPhones to get an upgrade. That's total speculation, but it sure sounds like a classic Apple move. The iPad, of course, would be able to take full advantage of multitasking, and Apple doubtlessly has considered user disappointment when they discover they can only do one thing at a time on the new device.

The iPhone user interface would obviously have to be redesigned to allow users to take advantage of multitasking. It could be something like a ProSwitcher-style "double-push" of the Home button… or maybe this is the use for the mysterious "triple tap" that's been found in the3.2 beta release of the iPhone SDK. It will be interesting to see how Apple implements it… and how it can be hacked to work better.

Iphones or i should say "phones with huge screens" use a huge amount of battery to keep it running.
this new OS, i believe, would just make the iphone's battery a little bit stronger, but not strong enough to keep it running a whole day for the multitasking!
      nice try anyways

If this isn't true I'll keep using ProSwitcher and hopefully it'll be ported to the iPad.

Have any of you considered Apple will add (to) multitasking in the next OS? Not in the way everyone thinks of multitasking.

What do I mean? Apple will deem a few more native (default) applications worthy to use background processes. It won't be a full on multitasking free for all, just an additional app here and there.

      Why?

Dev support. Devs currently like that they can make an application and not have to worry if it will conflict with other applications. Because Apple does not allow it. I don't really see that changing as it will most certainly mess with the user experience in Apples mind. You will still probably have to jailbreak to get that fix if you want it.

Whats the big deal? I've been multitasking with my 3gs for a long time now. It's called Backgrounder and it works great!

Gotta love backgrounder, i use it for when i play games, listen to pandora and still want to check my email/mms or anything else. And use SBSettings to kill processes that are running. Great App! Screw you apple! But better battery life would be nice!

All I want is to be allowed to respond to a text without quitting the app. And I had this feature with quickreply SMS when I was jailbroken. God I miss my JB iPhone!

Come on, let's be realistic here. Who the fu** cares if Apple adds multitasking. The day that jailbreaking ends on iDevices is the day I migrate to Android. (Unless Apple removed all restrictions - which will never happen)

I've been multitasking for as long as I can remember on my iPhone(s), as i'm sure most of you here have been. Face it, without jailbreak the iPhone is a micromanaged piece of sh*t.

Sure, some of the apps are cool - and I would miss them. But if my core functionality is limited and dictated by apple, it's not worth it to me.

The 3GS is more than capable of multitasking apps. I'm using Proswitcher and the battery life is roughly the same as when I didnt have it running. I run 4 to 6 apps at once and i'm not reaching for the charger every few hours. It lasts me the entire day, 7am-10pm. And yes I do a lot of browsing as well.

I dunno guys, you mean to tell me that Apple cant use Proswitcher as an example and make a multi tasking manager that doesnt suck up the juice that fast?? Gimme a break, of course they can. Apple just wants to sell products. Will the 4G have multi tasking? Probably. Will they add it to the 3GS? nope, cuz they want you to buy the new Iphone 3GS-A4 to the power 2... or whatever they are gonna call it.

Pisses me off to say this, but if they dont add multitasking and proper notifications... Im honestly gonna switch to Android because I would get more use out of it. Dont get all judgemental on me for saying that. I still love my iphone, but I need more.. I hate having to Jailbreak it when we all kno that it is capable of so much more.

      Take it easy guys.
